About the Author
Marlyn Musicant is a senior exhibitions coordinator at the Getty Research Institute. William Deverell is professor of history at the University of Southern California and director of the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West. Matthew W. Roth is director of corporate archives at the Automobile Club of Southern California and the founding curator of the Petersen Automotive Museum.

Glad to see this great architectural landmark so well treated

Glad to see this great architectural landmark so well treated. Great history of the tortured path it took to get this built. I love this building because of my personal history with it. This is where all the great rail trips of my youth and young adult-hood either started or ended. I bought this book mainly as a model railroading resource, but anyone who loves 20th century California Art Deco will be blown away at the beautiful imagery here. Beautiful color photography! I would also recommend "Los Angeles Union Station: Tracks to the Future" by William Bradley, another beautiful recent tribute to this great work of art. By the way they both got the title wrong! It should be L.A.U.P.T. - Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal. For railfans I would add "Last of the Great Stations: 50 Years of the Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal" by Bill Bradley. (Same Author?)

it's a terrific read. There are some very nicely printed reproductions ...

This book is the catalog of an exhibit at the Getty Museum, and contains three somewhat scholarly essays about the troubled history of the station. For someone who is an architecture and railroad buff, and has an interest in urban planning (such as me), it's a terrific read. There are some very nicely printed reproductions of details from the old plans, but the maps and site plans are, as result of having to fit the book format, a bit hard to read.

Fascinating insight

This book may not appeal to everyone but my interest in Mission and Spanish Revival architecture made it a must read. There is an emphasis on the political frustrations and delays in building this railway station and the obvious reason for calling it Union Station is explained. I was curious to know why Mission Revival architecture was chosen and this seems to be so that elements of Art Deco style could be included. There is an interesting planning elevation towards the end of this book that show a variety of window treatments that might have been used for the one section of the building.
