Mediocre Book on Medieval Myths

This book was the only text used in my Medievial Myth class, and while I was at first very excited to read this compilation it soon became a burden. Goodrich has lofty aims - to bring the origional texts to the reader in her own way with a minimum of abridgement and interference. Unfortuntally the text through the whole book is just confusing. The stroy of Peredur, a distant begening of the Aurthur Legends, is so disjointed as to be unreadable. Stories are also in modern language and story form, so although Beowulf was originally a poem, it is not in this translation. It was very dissapointing to have such high hopes for a valid littery work only to be left confused by the translated text. A better work is H.A. Guerber's Middle Ages from the Myths and Legends Collection. At least that work mixes coherent modern story with noted original translation to bring home the point.

Making a mockery of medieval myths

I am a professor of medieval literature, and have to say as a professional, that this book is just plain awful. It reduces huge epic stories, most originally composed in poetic form, to brief prose tales. Goodrich's word choices are poor, as are her deciions about which selections to "keep" and which ones to delete. Even seemingly small changes cause students problems in years to come. For instance, instead of using the standard English name for the great Frankish king (it is a translation, after all), that is Charlemagne, she translates the name awkwardly as "Carlemagne." Similarly, Roland is "Rollanz," Gueres is "Guenes," etc. These odd spelling choices make research difficult for students. Unfortunately, this book is completely worthless, and may even do damage if people read it and learn to hate medieval literature.

This book is overrated.

Even though there were some interesting points in this book, it really just put me to sleep. Overall, this book is boring, and I couldn't even finish it. I'm sure there are some more interesting books about medieval myths that I would suggest people read. I gave this book a 2 star because 1 star means that I through it away.

Just a Routine Nuclear War

Mr. Turtledove is a real pro, he probably couldn’t write a bad story if he tried. But this is not one of his better efforts. If you have read his “Hitler’s War” series you’ve pretty much read this one. It features very similar characters doing very similar things. It is the second book of his trilogy on a US vs Russia atomic war in the early 1950s. It has all the problems of a middle novel. It has to carry the story forward while setting up the last book. All this while still working as a stand alone novel. Mr. Turtledove does a better job than most at this but it is still mostly marching in place while ticking off a series of plot points.

Two-thirds of the book no more than place holding. Although he does a skilled job of weaving in backstory from novel number one most of the characters end the book pretty much where they started it.

However my personal problem with the book is the plot. “Lumbering” (his word) WWII bombers on both sides are carrying out the sporadic atomic bombing of various cities. The reaction is sort of “Well goldarn, those pesky Russkies did it again. I guess we better bomb one or two of their cities.” But nobody seems to put up a credible air defense. By 1951 (when the story takes place) those planes were
eminently defeatable. But Los Angles and Seattle have already been nuked along with other places overseas. In the real world this should stimulate an anti-air capability that would make Haiphong look like an open city.

Given the very high stakes a place like Antwerp would be in perpetual twilight from the fighter cover and the pilots would be sunburned by all the air-defense radars. Every Boy Scout, Girl Scout, 4Her and retiree would be in the Ground Observer Corps. Bomber bases would go right to the top of the target list and we’d probably be buying back P-51s and likely pilots from Brazil and Mexico. Oh, BTW: Everyone seems to have forgotten about radar directed anti-craft guns.

At least two aircraft carriers, maybe three, would be parked in Chesapeake Bay to defend the capital and the big Navy base at Norfolk. But no, Harry Truman sits in the Oval Office; secure in the knowledge that Washington won’t be bombed until the final volume.

The Formula Has Worn Thin

I’ve been a Turtledove fan for sometime now. However, I'll probably get the final book in this series and then call it quits with Mr. Turtledove. The formula for all of these books is the same and I've finally found it boring. Same writing/same cast of characters, names changed to protect this innocent. Most of these books could be edited down to a few chapters and you could have the entire series in one volume. The details of an atomic war are glossed over; improbable events-has anyone in the book heard of air defense, for example? The story is being stretched out for no reason than I can see.

About the Author
Bernice Rubens (1929-2004) was born in Cardiff, Wales in July 1928. She began writing at the age of 35, when her children started nursery school. Her second novel, Madame Sousatzka (1962), was filmed by John Schlesinger, with Shirley MacLaine in the leading role, in 1988. Her fourth novel, The Elected Member, won the 1970 Booker prize. She was shortlisted for the same prize again in 1978 for A Five Year Sentence. Her last novel, The Sergeants' Tale, was published in 2003. She was an honorary vice-president of International PEN and served as a Booker judge in 1986. Bernice Rubens died in 2004 aged 76.

A well- written novel

This is a well- written novel centering on the relationship between a devoted piano - teacher the Madame Sousatzka of the title, and a young aspiring painist. The action takes place largely in the home of Sousatzka where three other colorful characters also live. One is a 'countess' in retirement who spends most of her time sitting and looking at the world, the second is an osteopath whose theories aim to benefit mankind, and the third Jenny is a woman- of- the evening but one of special beauty and delicacy. Sousatzka herself is a woman who came to Britain as a refugee. She has developed her own system for teaching the piano , but herself doubts its efficacy.

This is a well- written novel which holds the interest throughout.

Delightful Main Trio

It was a good book, and it's nice to see three main characters who have personalities that are realistic. They're distinguishable, and each of the characters grows over the course of the book. The writing was good, and the story was engaging.

I feel like the story gets a little unreal when the other side characters come in, especially the villainous characters. Those motivations are never really explained, and one villain burns to death in a blaze of crazed glory and the other slinks away quietly. Some things could have been fleshed out more than they were.

Fantastic!

I loved this book even more than Traitor's Masque, which is saying something. I loved the complexity of the characters and the way that their deep friendships made me always feel "safe" as I'm reading a plot that was full of twists and turns. This is an excellent book, which I have recommended to all of my friends.

While I enjoyed reading "Always on the Run", I often found it to be closer to reading a story on a free online fiction website than something up to par with many published romance novels. I was distracted a few times by spelling errors and missing words, and this had a negative impact on my reading experience. I did enjoy the characters, especially Aunt Milly and Gramps. Though the story was a run-of-the-mill romance, the author did a good job of adding her own flair to the story. Overall, it was a good read for a rainy afternoon, and the price (free) was right.

Perfectly imperfect heroine to brighten up your day

Jamie is trying to live down her reputation as an emotional runner. When she's set up for yet another blind date, she strikes up a deal with the guy who is on the same plate as she is: not looking for love, just looking for peace and quiet from pushy relatives. When the deal ends up with both of them getting a little too close, they struggle to come to terms that this time, there's no running away from the emotions they arouse in each other.

The writing is warm, funny and fluid. The author is a gifted storyteller. We get the sense that this lady is struggling to make it through her 20's without going insane from all the pressure that's put on her, mainly by her sister who's marrying her ex. We are drawn into her struggle with heavy doses of self-deprecating humor and some clever depictions of bodily harm brought about by unfortunate events.

I love Jamie. She's fatally flawed, but that tells us she's also quite human. Immediately you latch onto her character as she talks just about every insecurity a woman can relate to in these times, but in a good way. You get the sense that despite the mess that is her life, she knows exactly who she is. She needs no rescuing, this one. She slays her own dragons to deserve her happy ending, and that's a good thing, because Cal, her hero, is busy slaying his own dragons in the quest to deserve her too. I love that about this story in that there's so much development and you can feel them growing as they get deeper and deeper into their relationship. None of them is the same as they were when the story began.

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR CHICK LIT THAT ISN'T SILLY OR VAPID, THIS ONE IS FOR YOU.

you get what you pay for

I downloaded this book when it was being offered for free, so I feel like I can't complain too much since I didn't fork over anything but a little of my time for it - but if I had paid for it, I would have been much more disappointed. There were a lot of errors in the book that at times made it very distracting to read and almost made me want to throw the towel in. Jamie had some cute moments, and overall she's a believable character - very human - but at times her "woe is me" attitude just got to be a little grating and I just wanted to smack her and tell her to get her s*** together, act like a grown up and deal.

About the Author
Allen was born in Leicester, England in 1864. After leaving school at the age of fifteen to support his family, Allen worked, read, and carefully observed the world around him. It was not until he was thirty-eight that he wrote "From Poverty to Power," one of his first motivational books. His next book, "As a Man Thinketh," established his reputation as an inspirational writer. Other books on spirituality included "The Eight Pillars of Wisdom" and "From Passion to Peace." Although his writing career lasted for only ten years, until his death in 1912, Allen produced twenty titles that influenced millions in the same manners as the words of Dale Carnegie and Norman Vincent Peale.

Michael T. Simpson is president/senior consultant of MTS Consulting, Inc., a firm specializing in network security and network design. His certifications include CEH, CISSP, Security+, OSSTMM Professional Security Tester (OPST), OSSTMM Professional Security Analyst (OPSA), ITIL, MCSE, MCDBA, MCSD, MCT, and OCP. He also holds an M.B.A. from M.B.A. Chaminade University and has authored or co-authored eight books. Mike has more than 30 years of industry experience, including 20 years with the U.S. Department of Defense, where he designed and configured computer networks, served as an Oracle database and UNIX administrator, and held multiple cyber security positions.

Kent Backman's expertise is in intrusion analysis, network vulnerability assessment, and opensource solution engineering. His interest and skill in ethical hacking developed while managing Web servers for Fortune 500 companies. An analyst for many security incident response teams, Kent spent several years in Baghdad as part of the advisory team to the Iraq Ministry of Defense, specializing in network security and Linux engineering. He holds RHCT, MCSA, CISSP, and CEH certifications and is a network security consultant in Honolulu.

James (Jim) Corley has more than twenty-five years of experience in IT as a systems analyst, network engineer, and security professional. He worked for the DoD for nine years as a database administrator and information systems security officer. For the past sixteen years, Jim has been a consultant to the DoD on dozens of IT programs supporting both classified and unclassified voice, video, and data systems. He has been a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) since 2002.
