Another Kennedy family saga, this one focusing on the women, from Irish forebears to feminist Rory Kennedy, daughter of Robert and Ethel. For Kennedy aficionados, much of the material is familiar. In 1849, immigrants Bridget Murphy and Patrick Kennedy met on the boat from Ireland. Nine years after their marriage, she was a widow with four children who worked as a domestic servant, then bought and ran a variety store. In some ways, for the women of the Kennedy family, Bridget's story is as inspiring as it gets. From Rose, who married Bridget's grandson, Joe, to some two dozen grandchildren, author Leamer (King of the Night, 1989) tells a story that is as sad as it is tragic, with Rose as its center. In the grip of the Roman Catholic Church--which saw the role of a woman as mother and moral center--Rose changed from an ambitious, lively, curious girl to a wife and mother whose emotions were rigidly controlled and whose mechanisms of denial so highly refined that she could accept her husband's lovers--notably Gloria Swanson--into her home. She passed much of that legacy on to her daughters Kathleen, Eunice, Patricia, Jean. Open displays of tenderness were reserved for Rosemary, the retarded child, who was lobotomized and institutionalized out of the public eye. Kathleen is captured as the American who enchanted English society until her death in a plane crash; Eunice as the most successful in building a life of her own. Pat and Jean were not so lucky. The prickly paths of the daughters-in-law--Jackie, Joan, and Ethel--are included here as well. Although the ambitions of many of Rose's granddaughters, including Maria Shriver and Caroline Kennedy, have been tempered by marriage and children, theirs is a generation that seems to have shaken off the chains of Kennedy women as victims of a moral dichotomy. Very interesting book, but kinda longwinded at times in descriptions of events, etc. I am a Kennedy family fanatic and it took me over 6 months to read this.

Ikram examines the long-term structural aspects of Egypt’s economy and of economic policy-making from 1952 to 2000. He first presents separate chronological accounts of economic development and policy making on the one hand and growth, productivity, and structural change on the other. He then presents individual chapters focused on balance of payments, foreign exchange, and other aspects of the external sector; public finances; the financial sector and monetary policy; labor force and employment; and poverty and income distribution. Gold standard

The other reviewers have made the points that I would have liked to have made. I have read every significant book that has been written on the Egyptian economy in the last 20 years, and this is better than all of them. By skillfully combining acute technical analysis, the best available data, and insider knowledge of the thinking of international agencies and Egyptian policymakers, this book sets the standard by which all subsequent studies of the Egyptian economy will be judged.

Excellent, well written analysis

This book examines the chief issues that Egyptian policymakers faced during the period starting with the Free Officers' revolution in July 1952 to the end of the Second Millenium (although there are occasional references to events up to 2002). The emphasis is on durable, structural issues, many of which continue to resonate with policymakers.

Readers looking for a detailed account of events on the lines of "this happened, then that happened" may be disappointed. Ikram's technique is to sketch out broad periods that shared major similarities and were largely affected by the same important economic events, eg, the period of the nationalizations and Arab socialism; the infitah or Open Door policy and the influx of oil revenues, worker remittances, foreign aid; the period of falling oil prices, squeezed resources, and major debt reschedulings; and the era of stabilization and the beginnings of significant structural reform, at least in the area of privatizing many of the public enterprises. He then examines the most important issues and questions that policymakers had to deal with during these periods. The emphasis is mainly on macroeconomic issues and policies. These are analyzed using tools of modern economic analysis, and supplemented by interviews with Egyptian policymakers (to see the compulsions that they were under) and from documents and discussions with representatives of the main providers of financial support to Egypt. A particularly fine chapter on what Egypt needs to do to sustain growth in the next 20 years or so rounds off the book.

The data in the book are more reliable than in any other study of the Egyptian economy, since Ikram has had continuous access to the data banks of the World Bank (the book's blurb says he is a former director of that organization), and of the International Monetary Fund. He also has had access to a considerable body of studies and other material from Egyptian ministries, the Central Bank of Egypt, and the Egyptian statistical agency. The book is written in a clear style, with a welcome touch of humor. In addition to appealing to students of Egypt and the Middle East, the book should provide excellent supplementary reading for courses in economic development and in economic policymaking.

This book is apparently the first in a new series from Routledge on Middle Eastern economies. It will be a very hard act to follow.

Outstanding study of Egyptian economy and policymaking

In the 1980s, as a post-graduate student in Middle East studies, I read Khalid Ikram's earlier book Egypt: Economic Management in a Period of Transition (Johns Hopkins University Press). My Cambridge University professor described it as "outstanding." Now Ikram has written another outstanding work.

This book examines economic policymaking in Egypt in the period 1952 to 2000. The book focuses on the more durable issues that policymakers confronted during this period, rather than (to quote Ikram) "on a day to day chronology or on quotidian details." The issues are covered in chapters dealing with investment and productivity, the balance of payments, public finance, the capital market and monetary policy, the labor force and employment, and poverty and income distribution, in addition to three chapters that cover broader issues of political economy.

There is an excellent final chapter on what Egypt needs to do in order to sustain growth in the future, that, in addition to dealing with questions connected with an outward looking strategy provides an in-depth analysis of institutional issues, such as the bureaucracy, the commercial judicial system, the system of taxation, shortcomings in the provision of trained labor, the cost to the environment of economic growth, the constraints imposed by the availability of Nile water, and how the present system of planning and economic management is increasingly being hemmed in by globalization and privatization, and will probably have to be replaced by a more flexible method of indicative planning.

Ikram, a former Director of the World Bank's Egypt department, clearly enjoys unparalleled access to Egyptian policymakers, and the book contains insights from interviews with several Ministers responsible for economic policy. He also quotes from Cabinet studies, as well as from studies by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The book is a veritable tour de force, and I recommend it highly to anyone interested in the development of Egypt and of the Middle East.

This is one of the best, and perhaps the best for many readers' needs, books on two port networks, analysis and design.

There are some analysis methods that are not shown in other books. The presentation is clear and thorough.

Not too bad

*More like 3.5 stars, but I bumped it up because overall it is a good book and worth owning

Overall, I do like this book. The material is very good. The reason that I didn't rate it higher was because of the writer's style. I will expand on this later.
To me, the purchase of this book is worth it just for the first 4 chapters. While the first chapter should be a review for anyone who has any experience with RF, (in fact it can be found in other places too, such as Pozar or Gonzallez), his approach to this is different slightly different than others. For example, reflection coefficient (gamma) is typically defined as gamma = (Z-Zo)/(Z+Zo), when dealing with generalized scattering parameters, the proper way to define this is to be gamma = (Z-Zo*)/(Z-Zo). Now if you dig enough in Gonzallez, you find this equation but it is nearly as quickly forgotten, since almost all examples in the book that follow use a real characteristic impedance in the systems. In this book, he uses complex Zo to create Smith charts to derive parameter for feed back impedances for amplifiers, which he uses in Chapter 3 of the book.

Also in chapter 1, he describes how to transform a two port network into a 3 port network. This would be helpful if you had S parameter data for a common emitter configured amplifier, but were possibly interested in converting it to a common base or common collector configuration.

In chapter 2, he then describes cascading two S parameter blocks together and gives equations which allows for quickly computing the effect on the S parameters from the new cascade network. He then goes into basic amplifier design that it similar to Gonzallez, but is certainly more terse.

In chapter 3, he covers basic conformal mapping theory and how to plot complex characteristic impedance Smith charts. He also uses a lot of the theory covered in chapters one and two in designing an amplifier. For example, he takes two port S parameter data, converts it to three port data so that he can then determine the impact of adding various components in the feed back path. To determine the ideal location, he would map the feedback impedance onto the gamma s Smith chart to determine stability and gain impacts. This is material that I have not seen in other books and is probably worth the price of admission here.

The rest of the chapters are pretty good too. The rest of chapter 3 covers computer optimization techniques with the goal of optimizing circuits. It seems a bit out of place with today's circuit simulation software, but maybe was more relevant when it was written (1992) when you might actually optimize your own circuits in a simulation. That being said, I know that I can use this material for another problem that I am working at work that is not related to circuit design.

A lot of chapter 7 is obsolete by today's standards. He discusses the some available SW packages that have been swallowed up by the RF design tool of ADS. He in fact uses demonstrates many examples using the tool. That being said, he does still provide some insight that is outside of just the SW tool, so it is still relevant.

My biggest issues with this book however are some of the examples. While the examples are relevant, I feel that after he has presented the theory in earlier sections, it gives him license to omit many steps in arriving at some of his numeric examples. Additionally, some of his theoretical derivations are not well explained. Fortunately, he does eventually demonstrate the utility of the theory, it just becomes difficult with his terse explanation in the examples.

Overall, I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn some new tricks with Smith charts and for the chapters on network synthesis (Chapters 4 and 5). Chapter 6 was also pretty good since it discussed approaches to use for broadband matching techniques.

JEKYLL AND HYDE - THE WAR YEARS - VOL 3

This was the third of three Goebbel War Year diaries that I bought and read. Although not the easiest prose to read -- in part they were not written necessarily to be read but to be perhaps used in a memoir that was destined to never be written -- this and the other two diaries are fascinating books for people fascinated by that era.
This diary ends on 9 April 45. According to the introduction he continued writing through at least 22 April 45 when he and his family moved into the bunker. It would be interesting to read any additional entries through 22 April -- and beyond if available -- as the situation became more hopeless. The book does, however, conclude with an epilogue that included his and his wife's last letters to his stepson, the only member of the Goebbels family to survive the war.
The term "Jekyll and Hyde" was easily applicable to the first diary and not as easily applicable to this diary. However there term is somewhat applicable. The man -- despite the obvious problems at the fronts -- still has hope. Maybe the hope is flickering but he still has hope. He does realize that military victory is now unattainable but maybe if the military can score one or two major successes they can finagle some kind of a negotiated settlement more favorable than "unconditional surrender". This thought appears to be running through the Nazi government during the February - April 45 timeframe covered in the book.
Whereas in the previous two diaries great words are written about great events that resulted in great victories, this time Goebbels write great words about not so great events. The brave German military puts up great resistance to stall an American, or a British, or a Soviet offensive. Nazi forces counterattack and push eight or ten or twelve kilometers. The war is not lost yet! Why are such events important? The longer the war goes on and the more casualties are inflicted upon the enemy maybe the people in the West will grow tired and more conciliatory towards a less than complete defeat of Germany. Or maybe by stretching out the war maybe the Nazis can finagle a separate settlement with the Soviets. Or maybe the western Allies will realize how dangerous the Soviets are -- who are, after all, spreading its Bolshevic tentacles over eastern Europe contrary to previous agreements. Goebbels is hoping that something -- anything -- will happen to preclude what looks like an inevitable defeat.
Reading the book one realizes how little hold the government actually had over the people. Even in the previous diaries there were criticisms of the government that was voiced by the people that Goebbels acknowledged. Of course, in 1945 there was little the government could do. The people were unhappy about the air raids for which the government generally and the Luftwaffe specifically had no answer. Althought Goebbels still disliked several of his counterparts in the government like Foreign Minister Ribbentrop his greatest condemnation falls upon Hermann Goering. He feels Goering's corrupt and inept leadership of the Luftwaffe is the main reason why victory that appeared so close in 1941 is now so far away in 1945. Yet he still writes that even as late as April 1945 if there are major personnel changes in the military and the government National Socialism could still be saved in Germany.
He is not beyond criticizing is Fuehrer. He still thinks Adolf Hitler himself can do no wrong. The problem is that Adolf Hitler has surrounded himself with wrong people and for whatever reasons will not get rid of them. Although Hitler agrees with almost all of Goebbels suggestions for fixing the government Hitler does virtually nothing. Goebbels is frustrated.
It is also interesting how his attitude toward the inferior Slavic Soviet forces has evolved. He is still convinced the Soviet military is -- man for man -- inferior to the German soldier. But the Germans are being overwhelmed by superior numbers and machinery being thrown at them by the Allies. But he is impressed with Stalin. Once upon a time he and others had scorned Stalin for the massive purges of the Soviet military in the late 1930s. At one point in the book he relates reviewing the biographies of the leading Soviet military leaders. The Soviet military leaders were all under the age of 50 and were die-hard Bolshevics who would do anything to win. This was a big reason why the Soviets survived the seemingly hopeless situation in 1941 and why they were winning the war in 1945. In contrast, the German military leaders were old and had no deep political or philosopical ties to National Socialism. If they won the war, great. If not, oh well. Goebbels concludes that maybe Stalin was not so crazy for purging his military and after the war the Nazis should do likewise with their military.
The popular perception of Hitler and his entourage is they were living in an insane fantasy land as the Soviets closed in on Berlin. Unfortunately, the last three weeks of Goebbels life were missing so maybe there was some degree of truth to that perception. But in the book you see a somewhat different view. Yes the war was going bad but he had to grasp at some kind of hope -- whatever that may be. Goebbels recognized that if the end is near it would be a catastrophic defeat. Therefore his only hope was to stretch the war out as long as possible and hope for some miracle. Hitler himself is not so much a ranting, raving lunatic (many of the accounts of Hitler's final days were written by witnesses who were the target of his anger and thus had a reason for depicting his as insane) as a man who is angry with his generals but is resigned to his fate.
As we know, neither Joseph Goebbels nor his Fuehrer survived the war and neither man was able to write their autobiographies explaining why they did what they did. Perhaps the closest thing to a Hitler autobiography would be Mein Kampf that depicted his early life and early political battles through 1924 and his "Table Talks" -- a series of monologues recorded between 1942 and 1944. For his Propaganda Minister these diaries is the closest we can probably hope to find to an autobiography. These "autobiographies" may be distorted but they are distorted in their own words.

A glimpse into an ugly mind

I didn't really know how to rate this book. As a diary? As history? Should I have rated Trevor-Roper's editing?
So I rated it a "5", but it hardly matters. I don't think anyone will read Goebbel's diary because it's "popular."
My reactions to this book were mixed. I found my opinion of Goebbels as a man and a mind considerably lower after finishing the book. Yes, I knew beforehand that he was a recalcitrant Nazi and mass-murderer. On the other hand, I've read Albert Speer's books, and he always spoke admiringly of Goebbel's intellect. I respect Speer's intellect highly, but I must say that he was wrong about Goebbels. Goebbels in this diary is an ugly, sordid, vicious little man, repeating the same tired mantras again and again, transparently trying to varnish his image for history, and sniping and gossipping about everyone around him. (But then, Speer found himself to be dreadfully wrong about Hitler, too.)
Intellect? I hardly found myself able to discern one in this mess.
Still, I'm glad I read the book. It adds another dimension to my understanding of the Third Reich, and serves as a counterbalance to the other accounts I've read.
But I wouldn't call the experience of reading this book enjoyable.

What every Bible teacher should read.

This book is based on decades of thorough research in several fields, which lends credibility to the author's insights. Such as astronomy, the ancient Hebrew calendar, the Jewish festivals and the relationship between all three. Old Testament prophesies and the profetic meaning of theJewish festivals, all made sense in a new way. Time and again, while reading, I had moments of "enlightenment", eye-openers, that made me see things in a new lights. Mysteries that I had taken "on faith" though they puzzled me for 40 years, suddenly became clear and made sense against the well-worked out background of research.
Unfortunately, Michael Rood also makes some profound statements that were not explained, and are quite controversial such as stating the exact age of the earth down to a week.
At times I also found the tenure of his comments quite critical.
However, they don't take away from what he does clearly convey, and that is a recording of the life, movements, actions and background of the ministry of Jesus that make you look at what happened so long ago with fresh and deeper understanding. This is because what emerges clearly is that as non-Jewish followers of the Messiah, we tend to overlook the significance of everything that happened in it's profoundly Jewish context -- and what it means for the world-wide Christian churches.
That is why this book still deserves 5 stars. I believe every pastor, priest and anyone teaching from the Bible, should read it.

Very enlightening on the ministry of Jesus

I learned a lot that I did not know about the apostles ... How they followed Jesus when he first called them and then went home and then followed him again. I liked the perspective on turning water into wine and all the other miracles and how it was also done to purposely break the man made laws of the Pharisees and to show that GOD'S law is not to be added to. Also when he first read in the temple and read only two verses instead of the required (by man's added law) three. I thought it was very well documented.

This book is amazing! Worth every penny, and then some!

This book is amazing! When I first heard Michael Rood claim that Jesus' ministry was only 70 weeks (490 days) long instead of 3.5 years long, I didn't believe it. But I checked it out online and found that the 3.5-year ministry idea was based on only two verses, one of which (John 6:5) was not in the earliest copies of the gospel of John, and the other mentions an unnamed feast that the 3.5-year folks say was a Passover, even though it occurred only a few weeks after Passover, so it should be Shavuot (Pentecost). To test further, my daughter and I went through the gospel of John following his many time clues to see if we could calculate the length of Jesus' ministry and we calculated 450 days, so we were short by 40 days. Then my daughter called me to say, "We left out the 40 days in the wilderness!" That brought us up to 490 days exactly. After that, I bought Michael Rood's book. The exact chronology is only the beginning of the amazing insights and information in the Chronological Gospels. So I repeat: This book is amazing!
