Kimberly KincId kicks of a new series with a must read.

Kimberly Kincaid kicks off a new series with Reckless and I have to say that after inhaling and absolutely loving it, that I have no doubt that this book and the series will be hopping onto a lot of keeper shelves and become instant favourites. I totally loved this book and Alex and Zoe. Hello, firefighters, enough said!

The characters, firehouse setting and storyline will feed your romance loving soul and will leave you feeling both happy that you’ve read it and disappointed that you’ve finished it and that the next book isn’t here yet. But you will finish it with a big goofy grin and with a new appreciation of the fire fighters who put their lives on the line every day and for the people who try so damn hard to make someone else’s life just a little better with a simple meal.

Alex Donovan has to be one of my favourite Kincaid hero’s. No it’s not just because he’s a firefighter. It’s the big heart that hides behind the daring outside that won me over. Yes Alex has no filter on his thoughts and has a reckless streak a mile wide but that’s who Alex is and he’s unapologetic about it. So when after a hot-headed move he gets sent to a soup kitchen as part of his probation he ends up doing a lot more than just biding his time till he’s done. Cue the swoon.

“He’d thought Zoe’s brazen side was beautiful, but her mettle was really just the flip side of her tenderness. God help him, he wanted her. All of her.”

As for Zoe Westin, I want her to be real so bad. I loved her grit, passion and determination to do something that she knows she is meant to do. Even if it means leaving a high profile restaurant to open up a much need soup kitchen in a chancy part of her hometown and with limited funding. This is what makes Zoe happy and she is going to succeed. All she needs is someone one to point out that it’s okay to ask for help. Good thing that comes in the form of Alex and his need to challenge and encourage Zoe.

“She knew she shouldn’t want him, with his rough edges and hot risks. But no matter how hard she tried to fight it, she couldn’t get past the truth. Alex Donovan made her want to break all her rules. And oh, how she didn’t hate it.”

As these two work together in the kitchen, things get hotter and hotter and I’m not just talking cooking heat. There no denying the attraction growing between them, too bad that Zoe’s dad is Alex’s boss and mentor. But after a dare to be reckless and a frightening incident brings them closer, they stop fighting and give in to the sparks. What neither expected was the connection and how deep and strong it becomes in a short amount of time. But when a call to a fire puts their new found happiness in jeopardy, can they find a way to be together and take the ultimate risk or will it prove to be too much?

“Where do you want me now?” Zoe’s eyes flashed open, her expression so sensual and wanting at the same time that it stole Alex’s breath. “Everywhere, Alex. I want you everywhere.”

Throw in some wonderful secondary characters who you will fall for, (I certainly did with Cole) a small town setting and that feeling you get when you read book that you know will stay with you long after you finish the last page and you have the latest bestseller from Kimberly Kincaid.

I don’t really like to compare authors, but if you love Jill Shalvis and Lori Foster, then you will love Kimberly Kincaid. Think small town romances that you can fall into and ones that make you want to pack your bags and move to a fictional town. If you haven’t already fallen in love with Kimberly Kincaid’s writing then you will after reading this book.

Lovely story about two characters, one reckless, the other safe, who both have amazing heart

Alex Donovan has a problem differentiating between brave and reckless... but for what it's worth, his heart is always in the right place.

We open with a warehouse fire that the lead fire chief tells the men to not go in. But Alex, knowing that abandoned buildings are home for the homeless, fights to go in and physically clear the building. After being held back, Alex finally just does what he's told not to do -- and with it, gets reprimanded with community service. The last place he wants to be, and with the last person he thinks he'll ever see -- Zoe Westin, the captain's daughter.

These two, while not with an extensive history, were fun to read. Zoe has her moments of feeling like Alex sees her as a child, and Alex has his moments in feeling like he should be turning his head, closing his eyes, whenever she's near.

Alex with his so-called recklessness, and Zoe with her by-the-book standards and rules, were so much fun to watch. Both played off one another and while one certainly didn't change the other, they worked well together and helped mold the other into a more rounded person. But the one thing both had was heart, and the need to help others.

Zoe was one of those characters you can't help but love. She wanted more from life than to feed the hungry -- she wanted to keep them well. Her heart was huge, and her ability to see the good in people was infectious.

And on my favorite note -- I love when series fold off of other series, and Ms. Kincaid does that with RESCUE SQUAD. We get to see a bit of Nick and Ava from ALL WRAPPED UP and that, seeing old characters from old series, always makes my heart happy.

I love Kimberly Kincaid and she continues to surprise me with every new book I read! I really liked this book. Who doesn't love a book with a hot firefighter and a forbidden romance!

Alex aka "Teflon" (due to his "special talents" and "trouble sliding right off him") is a firefighter at Engine 8. His passion & drive for being a firefighter sometimes causes him to be reckless. Following the rules and listening to his superiors orders is not always his first priority when possible lives are in danger. An incident causes him to be suspended from the job he loves and sentenced to community service at a local "soup kitchen"

Enter the forbidden romance...
Zoe Weston, daughter of Fire Captain at Engine 8, chooses to return to her hometown and run Hope House "soup kitchen" (in a not so safe neighborhood) versus working at a fancy restaurant. She's deciding feeding people the people of her community is more important. Her overprotective father does not approve of her job change, which puts a strain on their already rocky relationship.

See what happens when the reckless fireman has to work for his boss' "off limits" daughter, and she is speechless when she finds out her new "volunteer" serving community service hours is a not only a fireman from her father's fire house, but also someone she had a crush on.

You're going to love the firefighters of Engine 8! I look forward to more books in this series!!

Georgescu-Roegen: a missed Nobel prize

Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen's fame is due to his book The Entropy Law and Economic Process (1971) in which NGR conjugates thermodynamics and economics. But his importance for political economy goes far before the publication of this book and involves many different aspects of the analysis. While the complete theoretical framework described by NGR has been frequently contested, his analysis of the production process has been considered as truly innovative and useful, by many points of view.

Brilliant, but not Perfect

It must be admitted that Georgescu-Roegen's understanding of entropy was flawed. He, along with many other authors including physicists, thought entropy was a measure of disorder. It is not. That entropy is not a measure of disorder is discussed in a recent scholarly article by chemistry Prof. Frank Lambert, who has a nice web site devoted to the topic. More to the point, it was also discussed in Beard and Lozada's book about Georgescu-Roegen (p. 88, "Economics, Entropy, and the Environment: The Extraordinary Economics of Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen"). It's not easy to say what entropy actually is, but it is straightforward for scientists to measure that, say, the standard entropy of one mole of iron (about 55.8 grams of iron) is 27.7 Joules per Kelvin.

While Georgescu wasn't completely right about all of entropy's aspects, his attacks on Boltzmann's H-Theorem, and on the "information as entropy" school, show completely correct understanding of other aspects of entropy. Furthermore, in his indictment of neoclassical dynamic economics, he was the vanguard of critics who decry slavish devotion to mathematical models which assume we know the future (at least probabalistically). Absorbing Georgescu's lessons would've spared Economics Nobel Laureates Merton and Scholes their disastrous experience running the failed hedge fund Long-Term Capital Management (described in the book "When Genius Failed"): change happens, the past does not always predict the future, and the consequences of one's actions sometimes cannot be imagined by anyone. When investing money, that's a good perspective; when talking about man's effect on the environment, as Georgescu was, it's a perspective that could save the planet.

Priceless Story, Vastly Under-Appreciated Book

This book is a undiscovered treasure that deserves a much larger audience. Todd is an extremely gifted writer with a talent for dry understatement. His style is perfectly suited to his story, which, in a lesser writer's hands, would read like an 18th century supermarket-tabloid tale (which it is, in many ways!). The stylistic subtleties appear to have flown straight over the head of the first reviewer. Never mind. This book is solidly in the tradition of W. J. Bate and Simon Schama: a scholarly work written with an elegant fluency that's far too rare among scholars. It will appeal to all kinds of readers, in the academy and far beyond.
I was able to locate a paperback edition that was much cheaper than the hardcover, but apparently is out of print. I urge the publisher to reissue the paperback, and find this gem the audience it deserves.

A disappointing book on a fascinating subject

This book attempts to put the the theory of 'maternal impressions' into the context of 18th century society and medical thinking. In particular, it recounts the case of Mary Toft, a woman from Godalming in Surrey who claimed to give birth to numerous rabbits! It is clearly the result of considerable research, but the author is very far from a 'natural writer' and bores his audience throughout. A generous helping of turgid sociological commentary throughout does not help matters. I can now understand why this book semms to have sunk without a trace soon after publication.

You really must read the first page of this -- it's shocking, true, and the study never lets up. Todd has a brilliant and learned eye for what's most interesting about this era. Great book.

Cute imbued with purpose

They say that humor is subjective. They might as well just go and say the same thing for what folks find cute. What positively reduces one person to a pile of babbling goo might strike another as abominably saccharine. There is no accounting for taste. Personally, I have a low "awww" threshold. Cute, for me, has to go beyond long eyelashes and oversized heads. You've gotta have some substance to your adorableness or you'll just disappear in the midst of all the ootsy-cutesy picture book fare churned out each and every season. Aaron Zenz, I suspect, knows this. He can wrassle up a cutie pie baby animal with his colored pencils better than most folks I know, but he also knows that you need a reason for displaying those balls of big-eyed fluff. Enter, "Chuckling Ducklings". Part catchy rhyme, part baby animal nomenclature, part roly-poly balls of fur, Zenz deftly hones a book that could reasonably be called a triple threat. It's cute imbued with purpose.

It starts off innocuously enough. "Here's a puppy. There's a kitten. A baby bunny is what I am. A yawning fawn and chuckling ducklings. Cub, cub, cub, cub, piglet, lamb." By this point you've seen a fair number of baby animals cavorting about the place, but it's possible you haven't quite gotten the gist of the book yet. That's when Zenz tightens the screws. Suddenly we're looking at colts, fillies, and caterpillars. The book, it turns out, is a clever rhyming scheme of the names we give different kinds of baby animals. From poults to porcupettes the animals are named, interact, and at the end we are presented with a guide to all the animals and what their grown-up names will be.

The book reminded me a bit of that supremely hip Matthew Porter title "Calling All Animals" that came out a year or so ago. Like Zenz, Porter found that a good way of displaying animals with a common purpose is to find something informative that will intrigue both parents and kids. In Porter's case, he decided to go for collective names (a pride of lions, a charm of goldfinches, etc.). To my surprise I discovered that there really isn't a term for baby animal names. Or, if there is, it is relatively unknown to the gawking public folks like myself. Whatever it may be called, Zenz is sneaky with revealing that this is what the book's all about. You think you're just reading some everyday baby animal book and then WHAMMO! He hits you upside the head with a "Cub, Cub, Cub, Cub" sequence of raccoon, bear, panda, and tiger. Even then, you would be forgiven for thinking that he's just going to stick with the usual. That is, until you start reading about a "cygnet", an "eyas", a "poult", and a "squab" all on the same two-page spread. By the time the puggles and the leveret (a new one on me) arrive, the book has officially crossed over from mere amusement to interesting and informative. The little guide at the back pairing baby animals with their grown-up names will serve as a lifesaver for those parents who have no idea what an eyas even is (hint: it's a baby hawk). My one objection to the book is that Zenz doesn't include the human kid who appears earlier in the book alongside all the animals. When I was a child I remember having this eye-opening moment when I realized that humans were animals. Such a moment wouldn't have been out of place in "Chuckling Ducklings".

It took me a while to figure out exactly what kind of medium Zenz was working in, since the one it looked like didn't make sense. I mean, it kinda resembled colored pencils, but come on. Seriously. Colored pencils NEVER look like this. I mean, the lines are so crisp you could cut yourself on them. Circles, like the heads of polliwogs, have a Jeff Kinney-esque spherical beauty. Yet a glance, and then a reglance at the publication page of the book confirms it. Believe it or not, Zenz is a colored pencil man. I can only assume that his pencil sharpener can be heard howling at all times of day and night, because it's not just that the linework is perfect in its precision, but the shading is worth a gander as well.

Oh. And it's cute. Did I mention it was cute? It's super cute. I mean, you have to be made of pretty tough stuff to resist baby ducks. But as I say, cute is subjective. One man's aww is another man's eauughhh!!!! For me, this book hits on the right levels. The merely sweet is now serving a higher call. There are other books that cover this subject matter, of course. Pam Munoz Ryan's "A Pinky is a Baby Mouse and Other Baby Animal Names" comes to mind, as does Eric Carle's classic "Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too?" Still and all, Zenz's book will be useful to those who wish to teach on the sly. It hides its learning behind downy feathers and beaming beaks. Definitely more than meets the eye.

I learned a lot of new baby animal names. Each one of the baby animals are cutely drawn. It would be nice if the author made wallpaper/prints out of his artwork. They would look wonderful in a baby nursery.

All around a great book, that young and old will enjoy and learn from.

Nuts and Bolts information!

-First off- I was looking for a book to help me understand the physical qualities of a liner-lock and other aspects of knife construction. This book came recommended by a local blacksmith and an online connection.
-You will not be dissapointed by the detail, process, and talk-through of the various aspects of the lock, blade and design considerations explored here. Troubleshoting is included- as is tooling setup and the philosophy of "Why" things are done.
-I would reccomend this as one of the 3 books ANY aspiring knife/blade maker or value/appraisal person should own. Boyle- Terzoula- Goddard... between these 3- if you cant make a knife- you aint trying!

The best in-print book on this topic

Robert Terzuola's name will be instantly recognizable to knife collectors the world over as the veteran maker of some of the finest tactical knives available. In this excellent book, Terzuola shares his knowledge of the new 'hot' item among collectors - the tactical folding knife.
The book covers design, shaping, fitting and finishing tactical folders in a refreshingly readable style. Simple enough for even non-knife enthusiasts yet detailed enough for new makers looking to improve their work - a great combination. Accompanied by masterful advice, clear step-by-step photographs, and superb diagrams of the famous linerlock mechanism, this book is worth every cent for the information value alone. If you are a beginning maker or simply interested in how much craftsmanship goes into these tools, you need to look no further than this book.

Great Resource but Hard to Find

After reading various reviews on how useful the information in this book is and how hard to find I decided to look for an electronic alternative.

I found the e-version on goggle(sic) play books. The price was extremely affordable.

Wendy Dolan has loved designing and creating from an early age. She studied Art and Textiles and qualified with a Bachelor of Education Honours Degree, teaching in Primary Schools for several years. During this time she returned to college part time and gained a Diploma in Creative Embroidery.

Innovative ideas

The book is filled with fresh and creative ideas. I love the multiple techniques and the resulting textures achieved. I am currently working on a layered meadow scene and next will tackle a large textured vessel.
