Randy Mosher is the author of "Tasting Beer" and a nationally recognized expert on beer and brewing. He writes for virtually all of the national beer and brewing-related publications, has lectured to audiences across the United States, and has taught beer style courses. He is active in the leadership of the Chicago Beer Society, the American Homebrewers Association, and the Brewers Association. Radical like Copernicus!

I have a new favorite brewing book - Radical Brewing by Randy Mosher. I must admit that I was put off by the title at first. "Radical Brewing? I don't want to brew weird stuff, I want to brew good stuff..." But after I had a chance to browse thru a copy, I realized there was nothing weird about it. It is radical like Copernicus was radical. It is full of really interesting information that I had not known or barely heard of before. This is a spectrum of brewing, brews, and brewers.

How to describe it??

Broadly, it is like Designing Great Beers in that it presents the ingredients of brewing, the methods for using them and how various beer styles were developed by using those ingredients.

The difference could be described in this way though: If DGB were described as a university course in the main lecture hall on brewing, then Radical Brewing is sitting down with the Prof one-on-one, while he regales with his experiences and pours you samples as he talks. And, if you know Randy, then this description of his book is self-explanatory. It really is a book that you will pick up and read for the fun of it. There are lots of interesting recipes, and his discussion makes you want to try them.

A great book to further your homebrewing education.

The best second book on brewing you should get

Wow. Radical, indeed. The etymology is apropos; radical comes from the Latin radix, meaning root. Mosher gets to the root of all sorts of subjects with his witty style and erudition. This guy knows his stuff. If there is any grain or sugar or spice or herb in this world that has ended up in a brewpot, Mosher has probably written about it.

At the risk of turning this review section into a lovefest, I agree with the other reviewers. If you've never brewed before, get a good basic text; you can't do better than Palmer's How to Brew, and he's generous enough to put the entire text on line for free perusal--although you'll probably want to go ahead and get a hard copy just for convenience. Others will have their own preferences for a basic brewing book. I started out a couple of decades ago with Papazian's book, and it's fine--but I think Palmer's is a tad better.

One theme Mosher stresses is how the homebrewer can afford to use the best ingredients for his brew, something a corporate brewer can't. So what if using Maris Otter malt and lots of noble hops might make that batch cost a few cents more? You can afford it, and can make a brew that no big corporation would ever make.

If I were just starting out today, I'd probably spring for Palmer's book and this one by Mosher. Between those two you'd be able to brew virtually any style you want to. Plus, after reading Radical Brewing you'd have more esoteric beer knowledge than any sane person needs. But who ever said that homebrewers were sane?

The most fun you'll ever have reading a brewing text

Funny thing is, I have read How to Brew and Designing Great Beers, written by two of the other "raters" of Radical Brewing.

If your a beginner looking to get into this hobby, BUY HOW TO BREW TODAY! It is amazing.

If you are a hardcore masher that has been doing everything "right" but still aren't winning those medals that you want, BUY DESIGNING GREAT BEERS TODAY!

Somewhere in no way inbetween these books is Radical Brewing. An informative text about beers of old as well as beers that have yet to even find a style guideline. I'm a BJCP judge and trust me, they ain't there. He completely shakes the platform that much of the American craft brewing scene has stood on, calling for the judicious use of adjuncts in many instances, including many exotic sugars that I had never even heard of.

The book also delves into the history of each style and how they have been produced throughout the years. Early on, he moves through the Belgian abbey ales. Later he tackles the challenges of Belgium with sections on sour browns, Flemish Reds, Lambics, Wit beers, and Saisons (though he doesn't do the best job of explaining proper fermentation of the saisons). He even does a synopsis of the Gose beer of Germany. I've only seen these beers once!

Randy is obviously someone who has taken homebrewing as seriously as anyone could, for about as long as anyone could. His book is entertaining and is a wealth of knowledge (even if I don't agree with EVERYTHING he says) for brewers at all levels. It is not a book that the novice should shy away from, yet it is also one that every advanced homebrewer should already own. And the historical quotes and poems on beer are just awesome. I used a good many of them on the beer menu for my wedding reception. HEHE!

Another excellent, 174 pages of "The Simpsons." Some of these comics are better than their later episodes. This book includes appearances by some less frequent characters like Doctor Nick, Homer's former psychotic boss Hank Scorpio, Luann Van Houten's boyfriend Pyro, Dr. Colossus, and even Waylon Smithers's favorite 8 1/2-incher...Malibu Stacy!

"Judge Marge"--Marge becomes a T.V. judge and her frequent absence causes her household to fall apart. I like the part where Lisa goes on a power trip after she starts wearing a monocle.
"Stacy's Busy Day!"--A comic short for Malibu Stacy! I love it! Let's have more of these! Malibu Stacy shows off some of her many careers and identities (my favorites are "KISS Army Stacy" and "Cosmetic Surgery Stacy"). There are also fan letters, one from a fan who Stacy thinks is a "sharp-eyed little girl" with "an unusual and charming name," Waylon Smithers.
"Viva Bart"--In a Duff Beer contest, Homer wins two weeks in Bosqueverde--a tropical paradise that has been in a state of perpetual civil war for the past thirty years.
"Beauty School Hellcats"--After Selma makes an effort to make DMV customers actually look good in their driver's license photos, she and Patty are given a vacation to beauty school to get rid of her creative impulses.

"Cruisin' for a Bruisin'"--After ruining his and Marge's cruise by giving booze to a recovering alcoholic dolphin, Homer takes Mr. Burns's discarded yacht to start his own cruise line, with some familiar Springfield couples as guests. Hank Scorpio appears at the end in a strip unrelated to this story (he's not one of my favorite characters).
"Crime Family Practice"--Short comic featuring Dr. Nick who is kidnapped to give medical treatment to the mob.
"Growing Pains"--Bart gets involved in a seed-selling scam, so The Simpsons put on a Seed Fair which includes a fashion report by Joan Rivers and her daughter. However, Mr. Burns, who's allergic to growing things (makes sense), may have the last say.
"The Abominable Dr. Colossus"--Dr. Colossus fans will like this book because he also appears in "Judge Marge." In this short, despite attempts at being evil and menacing, Dr. Colossus is seen as a lovable buffoon in Springfield.

"Merchants of Vengeance"--A wave of shoplifting plagues Springfield and shopkeepers Ned Flanders, Apu, and the comic Book Guy ban together to fight it. Comic Book Guy loves the crime-fighting group so much, he can't let it go even when the shoplifting stops. Comic Book Guy actually shows some emotion tearing up in one box.
"In Burns We Trust"--Mr. Burns takes over Rev. Lovejoy's church in his endless quest for more power. Meanwhile, Ned Flanders looks for a new church.
"How Marge Got Her Curtains Back"--In this short, Marge's curtains go down the garbage disposal and she's having a hard time finding that classic corncob pattern.

It was really none of his business, but he was still curious. He folded the Ohio letter in half and stashed it in his back pocket. It would get wrinkled, but at least Anna wouldn’t know about it.

As Caleb struggles through some inner battles, he secretly starts a correspondence with a widow and her daughter. Their unabashed faith in God convicts him and increases his inner struggles.

Unable to find a steady job, Maggie places an advertisement to become a mail-order bride. Her daughter, Rachel, is her motivation and encouragement, but if Maggie doesn’t find a job or husband soon, Rachel might not survive through the next year.

Can Caleb learn to trust God despite his past? Can Maggie and Rachel hold onto their faith despite all their trials? What will happen when they meet in person?

While this book can be read as a stand alone, it would be easier to understand some portions of the story if you read the second book of the series, Be Thou My Vision first.

The story is a simple and good read, filled with interesting characters that have had to deal with many difficult challenges, but still do their utmost to be the best person they can be. Faith in God and in prayer are an important aspect in Amazing Grace and author Faith Blum handles these themes with delicacy and subtlety. This book would appeal to any reader who is looking for a sweet romance, likes historical fiction, and who enjoys reading books with a strong Christian focus. About the Author
At the suggestion of a friend, I entered my first book into the Women of Faith contest. A Mighty Fortress was a semi-finalist for the 2013 contest and after praying about the opportunity WestBow Press gave me to publish at a discounted price, I decided to publish the book independently on my own. Shortly after making this decision and sending my manuscript to a few beta readers, one of my beta readers asked what the sequel was going to be about. I hadn’t even thought about a sequel, but once the idea was planted in my brain, I came up with ideas for at least six books in the Hymns of the West series. I love to read Historical Fiction, especially Westerns. My goal is to create clean, fun, and challenging Western stories for the whole family. That being said, I don’t gloss over the hard issues, either. When I’m not writing, you can probably find me reading, crafting, playing piano, playing games with my family, or petting a cat (sometimes while doing one of the other things). I live with my family in the Northern Midwest on a hobby farm where I sometimes have to do some goat wrestling or feeding goat kids in the early morning because I’m the only one who wakes up that early. Potential-Filled, But Disappointing

Blum has a lot of potential as a writer. Her plot idea for Amazing Grace, though cliché (mail order bride stories are nothing new), contained many unique elements. I love how all the different books in her series are interconnected, and I find it so neat how all the books in this series are themed around a different hymn. I especially appreciate Blum's dedication to upholding biblical standards and presenting the gospel message in all her books. Lastly, while Amazing Grace is a love story of sorts, it portrays relationships of exemplary purity and decorum.

However, on the downside, Blum characters and plot were not developed beyond a surfacey narration. I was disappointed that this story's perspective was written from that of an outside observer, rather than from the personal perspectives of the individuals who make up this story. This made it hard to become attached to her characters, and made the tale drone on in a disinterested fashion at times.

There was something that disappointed me even more about Blum’s story. I was happy that she did not gloss over the difficult, painful realities of this sin-filled planet, but, at the same time, I found it ironic that she described these violent events in such detail, while quickly skimming over more important events. Obviously, these descriptions were in no way gruesome, but they did make me wince, especially her description of Jeb's fight with his father. Younger readers may find this disturbing.

Then, on the flip side, Blum portrays the lives of the Christian characters in such an extreme light of perfection that I found it very difficult to relate to them. While I firmly believe that believers can and should overcome sin by the power of the Spirit, the reality is that intense struggles with temptation and often failure are part of this process. Unfortunately, Blum's story overlooks this struggle, except to include it in the most surfacey manner, and thus her opportunity to reach out to readers who are going through such struggles is lost.

It is my hope that in her future works, Blum will develop her potential-filled plotlines and characters, and incorporate real-life struggles and successful battles for the victory in deeper, more powerful ways than she did in Amazing Grace.

Great Christian Book!

Stories about mail-order brides always intrigue me. Not being very romantic, I'm not really sure why (maybe it's the history or unusual concept); but I was happy to realize that Amazing Grace incorporated the story of a mail-order bride and found the first portion of the story very interesting as it bounced between several correspondents.

As the story progressed, I got to know Caleb, Anna, Iain, Maggie, Rachel, Miles, John, James, and Toby, and enjoyed following their story. There is definitely a strong Christian emphasis in the story (which I appreciate) and a lot about seeking God for His direction in your life.

A few things I really appreciated:
~I appreciated how Miles would just break out into prayer during tough times.
~I appreciated the realistic conclusion that though we may present man with the Gospel, we cannot force him to accept it. Though I almost didn't want to read it, it is very true that some people, though we witness to them, we may never know in this life whether or not they accepted that Gospel for their own.
~I appreciated that the salvation message was very clearly presented.

A few things that I was hesitant about:
~I will admit that I was very cautious in reading about a Christian woman corresponding with (and practically courting) an unbeliever. Though it turned out well (and it was very clear that Maggie was not the reason for Caleb's profession of faith), I know that such is not always the case. It is easy for our emotions to run away with us and a Christian girl might hope for the same results as Maggie and Caleb, and before she realizes it, gets swept into an unbiblical marriage. This is pretty much the main point that I cringed in reading the book. I think the author handled the situation well, with the characters bathing the situation in prayer and getting godly counsel, but at the same time, would caution girls not to take Maggie's story as their pattern for courtship/dating.

(I'll admit, this one had me laughing out loud [which doesn't happen often while I'm reading] and my family had to know what was so funny)

"My caution to you is to not get so caught up in the romance you lose sight of God. God should always come first in any relationship."

"As good as she may be for him, it is never good to go contrary to God's will and in this case, His will is very clear."

Sweet and Meaningful

Rating: PG (a drunken character and some clean romance)

I had heard about the Hymns of the West series and even interacted with Faith a little online, but I didn't actually read any of her books until we started doing each others' blog tours. I actually interviewed her on my author blog today. Amazing Grace is the only one I've read so far and I really enjoyed it. I read the prologue one day, but once I actually sat down to read more a few days later, I finished it in an evening and a morning. And despite being book three, it really can be read as a standalone. I'm sure I would get more out of it by reading the others too, but it didn't prevent my understanding this book to have not read the others first.

Writing: 4/5

Faith's writing gave me a really good idea of the story and all that was going on. It definitely held my attention and kept me in the story. There were some points where the writing style seemed rather unpolished, and it was hard at the very first to figure out who Duncan, Maggie, and Rachel were, and what their relationship to one another was. It didn't take long for me to figure it out, though. The only other thing I wasn't sure about with the writing was that it and the dialogue didn't seem quite old fashioned enough for the era. I did really love how many of Maggie and Caleb's letters were included. That was a neat touch.

Setting: 5/5

The setting seemed fairly realistic, not out of place with other books of similar genre like Little House or Sarah, Plain and Tall. Nothing stuck out to me as being out of place historically, and it felt like a real place. It was interesting when a certain character had an "apoplectic fit" as they called it, but I could identify it as a stroke. It really made me think about medicine in the old days and how they really didn't know all the things we do today.

Plot: 4/5

I've been fascinated with the concept of a mail order bride ever since I read Sarah, Plain and Tall. Not that I would ever want to be one, I certainly wouldn't, but it's a very interesting concept. I supposed it's sort of the pioneer equivalent of internet dating, but it has a completely different feel. Now, while that is a major part of the plot, it's really more about faith. The characters go through a lot of uncertain situations, some involving becoming a Christian, some involving a congregation that doesn't like the pastor to preach convicting sermons, some with drunken family members, some just life and carrying on through hardship and sorrow. There is also a bit of a clean romance side to the story, as it does involve two weddings. The part of the story involving the pastor reminded me sadly of the church today. People don't want to hear the hard convicting stuff that's in the Bible. Occasionally the story would skip and it seemed like something interesting would be left out, like Rachel reaching out to Toby and getting him to stop being a bully, but I still really enjoyed the story. I don't know why I waited so long to read Faith Blum. After all, it's more of a pioneer story like my beloved Little House than like a western movie that would bore me less than halfway in.

Character Development: 4/5

I really liked the characters. Caleb was certainly interesting, I liked Maggie a lot, and I loved seeing their relationship develop. Rachel was a very sweet little girl, though very stubborn, and I loved how she used her stubborn nature in the right way. I enjoyed getting to know Miles and Anna, and now I've read the description of book 2, Be Thou My Vision, I want to read it to get to know them better. I kind of felt sorry for Iain, though also a little scared of them. I felt like the characters could have had a little more depth, but they were still plenty well developed for me to enjoy the story. And I can be picky about character development.

Amazing Grace was a really good story and I definitely recommend it.

Lasting Love

I really like this book, although it was so very sad. The plot seemed so real, that I sympathized with the misunderstanding.
Donato & Grace Vittoria lost their infant son by cot death, or what we call crib death, we have come such a long way since this was written, yet crib death still happens.
Donato let Grace walk out of his life, because he felt she needed time to come to grips with the death of their son Paolo. Grace left Donato because she was informed by his sister that he had turned to another woman in his grief and she couldn't cope with that along with the death of Paolo, and the treatment she received in the children's home after the death of her parents.
Grace was battling 5 foes, 1.the death of her son. 2.Donato going to another woman for support. 3.Donato's crazed sister Bianca Bellini. 4. her feelings for Donato's young brother Lorenzo. 5.The ghosts of her past rejections when she was going to be adopted by the Blairs, but the family didn't want a child with any problems, she also felt that Grace had alienated her mother's affections from her, as well as Lorenzo's love
Grace still had nightmares about the death of her parents.
It seems that Donato had no knowledge of the hell Grace lived through by the hands of the Blairs.
Now she received a telegram telling her that her beloved Mother-in-law Liliana was dead, and she was requested to come to the funeral.
Grace returned to Italy, only to find Donato was the one to pick her up. There and then started another battle of love she still had for her husband, but the horror of his being with another woman couldn't be over looked, or forgotten.
Almost right away Bianca started her campaign to get rid of Grace again, only this time she put the blame of Paolo on Grace, because Bianca found she couldn't have children unless she had a operation. This too she blamed Grace for.
Bianca was married to Donato's best friend Romano(no one knew the horror Romano was going through).
But Bianca was found out by Lorenzo's pet parrot Benito. He told Donato about the call from Bianca and Donato came after Grace, he heard why Grace believed he had been unfaithful to her and the other poisons Binaca had in her sick mind.

Nothing special

I liked the book, but I didn't love it. The dialogue between the main male and female leads is ok, the chemistry between them is good and the storyline is plausible. But the book left me thinking that I wish they would get to the point and stop dragging out the emotional scenes. It seems as if those scenes are just filler and the story really didn't need it. I recommend the book, but with reservations.

I know it would not be a story without outside influence...ie spoiled sister of H. And add insecurities of the h. So it goes without saying that this story has several twists and turns. It was a good read. And I will read it again.
