Ollier and Pain succeed in bringing attention to the entire mantle, or regolith, that covers bedrock. That is, soil, weathered rock (saprolite), residuum, transported surficial sediment, and chemical products. Essentially this is a complete reworking of the now dated title WEATHERING.
The economic importance of regolith studies in Australia has paid off for mining concerns. But the authors include much here for pedologists, geographers, and sedimentary geologists working in arid and semi-arid environments. I liked their concept of 'whole continent' evolutionary geomorphology (p 274) which was introduced previously in ANCIENT LANDFORMS.

In my opinion, this is one of the better books available for soil scientists, geomorphologists, and engineering geologists who need a good desk reference book on soil pedogenesis and landforms. The only weakness is the dearth of discussion on landslides and their role in landscape development.

Steven Heller's "Iron Fists" makes a sophisticated and visually arresting comparison between modern corporate-branding strategies - slogans, mascots, jingles and the rest - and those adopted by "four of the most destructive 20th-century totalitarian regimes": Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, the Soviet Union under Lenin and Stalin, and Mao's China. As he pursues his four "case studies," Heller, by means of unsettling images and shrewd analysis, amply restores the vileness to branding.

This is a great book that any graphic designer or history lover should have. It tells you how Hitler, Mussolini, Lenin and the chinese leaders were capable to move and brainwash the population of their respective countries by using the propaganda.

The look of total control

A reasonable introduction to the way four totalitarian governments presented their public face. The book joins a slowly expanding library of titles dealing with State graphics in China, Germany, Italy and the Soviet Union. Steve Heller had an earlier look at Germany with his 2000 published book 'The Swastika: Symbol beyond redemption' and some of that is probably included in these pages, Prestel and Tashen have both published titles covering East German, North Korean and Chinese propaganda posters.

Of the four countries surveyed maybe the odd one out is Italy, the images in the book don't seem to have any distinctive feel about them, perhaps Mussolini was content to have his face everywhere and that was enough. So completely different to the Nazi way of presenting their leader and political culture. Pages fifty-two and fifty-three show a 1938 graphics manual published by the German Labor Front showing the correct types to use: Fractur; Rotunda; Futura. Rotunda in particular seems the type of choice in so much printed matter throughout the German chapter.

The Soviet Union is the clear winner for eye-catching persuasion. The 1917 revolution swept away existing design styles and new European art 'isms' influenced several designers to start afresh with bold graphics and especially photomontages. Alexander Rodchenko, El Lissitzky and Varvara Stepanova produced posters and photobooks that still look exciting today. Photography was an important part of Soviet propaganda but this didn't seem to influence the revolution in communist China where paintings inspired the masses, paintings and illustrations were part of their culture for centuries. Chairman Mao, peasants and the military were always shown striding confidently into the future (with or without Mao's Little Red Book).

Most of the images are reproductions of printed matter: posters; book covers (and some inside spreads from illustrative ones) newspapers; magazines; postcards and more. Non-printed matter includes badges, paintings and statues. There are several interesting whole page photos, rather wasted because they are just used to carry smaller images of print material. Though the book was published by Phaidon it was designed by a New York company so avoids the usual tiny text and plenty of empty page space that is typical of their titles.

About the Author

Matthew P. Stephens is a professor and a University Faculty Scholar in the College of Technology at Purdue University, where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in facilities planning, statistical quality control, and productivity- and reliability-based maintenance management. Stephens holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Southern Illinois University and the University of Arkansas, with specialization in operations management and statistics. He spent nine years with several manufacturing and business enterprises, and he has been involved as a consultant with a number of major manufacturing companies. Stephens has numerous publications to his credit including several internationally adopted textbooks.

Fred E. Meyers, P.E., is an emeritus professor in the College of Engineering and Technology at Southern Illinois University. He is an author and consultant, principal of Fred E. Meyers & Associates. Meyers has worked in heavy equipment manufacturing, aerospace, appliance manufacturing, and several other areas. His vast experience and varied assignments have made significant contributions to this textbook. His previous books include Plant Layout and Material Handling (1993) and Motion and Time Study for Lean Manufacturing (with James R. Stewart) (2001).

Fortunately, I also learned a little about W

This book was part of my studies at ECU, where I received a BS in manufacturing, in 2013. It portrays the current style of management in the western world, which has led us into industrial decline for decades. Fortunately, I also learned a little about W. Edwards Deming at the university. He was not given the credit he deserves, nor did we really study his teachings. I have done this myself. This book is a farce and a travesty, for example saying if a department saves $100,000 per year per employee, it doesn't have to worry about layoffs or elimination. Really, what if you make carburetors and somebody invents fuel injection? This book and its style of thinking is destroying us, WAKE UP AMERICA! DEMING !!!
Another example from the text: Plants with incentive systems operate at 120% ! That is like shooting 10 free throws in a basketball game and making 12 ! IT CANNOT BE DONE !!! STUDY DEMING or God help us!!!

Taking it up a Notch

I would first like to say thank you to the author for making this available. The content is full of good starting points for any good class and instruction. It is designed to be used by those who have accomplished good working skills and a well rounded background in Bushcraft. I think it is the idea and goal of the author to set a more rigid set of principals that need to be taught by any and all who wish to teach and pass on Bush knowledge. This is my own feelings as well. I hope those who are interested will find this just as useful as I do!

Good book but if you want detail, look into his other books. This is just want it claims to be... A course syllabus for the experienced instructor. Lots of organization for a course and points to all of the needed key concepts but the detail is expected to be in the mind of the instructor or found in some of his other resources. This is a great companion book to go with his other books.

For experienced coders

Good book if you already have some experience with Libgdx or other game engine . This is not a beginner book!

The book will teach you how to work with sprites, process user input, audio, text rendering, 2D physics etc ... in a cookbook like manner, meaning that you know what you want to do (from your previous experience with other game engines or your own) but you need a quick introduction in how to do it with Libgdx.

In short, this is a book aimed at the intermediate to advanced game programmers.

How to start a one man army game development? This book explains it.

First I should mention that it took me a while to decide whether I should start using AndEngine or Libgdx. After serious research my conclusions were that Libgdx is the better option. The reasons are that it’s still being updated and code testing is much faster. At this point the learning resources for Libgdx are basically two – the tutorials on their website and this book. Currently there is only one book more which is said to be outdated.

As a beginner I decided to start learning from the book first because books tend to have some structure. And I must say that the book is indeed very well structured and there are a lot of useful details. At first I was expecting to have some problems with comprehending the material but the authors did a very good job in explaining with layman’s terms. If I have to be honest - you can actually feel the amount of work spent on this book.

While going through this book, I learned how to work with Libgdx’s 2D API and create complex 2D effects such as particles, shaders, etc. Now I also know how to set up nice background music in my game and how to create a good looking text. There is a lot of material covered on the topic of optimisation which is crucial for smooth running on phones. I think that the tip of the iceberg is the chapter about third-party libraries and extras. It is very useful because it covers the most popular “goodies” used with Libgdx. This includes – multilingual support, skeleton animation, lighting and software architecture.

This book is truly a “game development cookbook” because it explains everything needed to build a professionally looking game. I would like to thank the whole team and especially the authors for their amazing work. I recommend this book.

Great "Cook Book"

This "Cook book" is exactly what I was looking for. Many of the online tuts don't give as much detail as this book does and it certainly comes in handy. Unfortunately, like most Java implementations, there is a lot of code to write to do simple things but that's not the fault of the books author.

A little too long but good decription of Thai prostitution

This is about a graduate student that decides to write her PhD thesis in Anthropology about the notorious red-light district of Bangkok called Patpong. During this time she interviewed dozens of pimps, prostitutes, and "farangs", who are foreigners who come to PatPong as customers. She takes several trips with various prostitutes back to their hometowns in the upcountry to see how they grew up.

She also relates her own problematic affair with a Thai pimp boyfriend. Later in the book, during her last year there, she took several trips to several different beach destinations.

I thought the book was a little long for the subject matter; there seemed to be some repetitious themes that made you want to say, "just get on with it". But overall, well done.

Patpong Sisters

"Patpong Sisters" is a very accurate description of the lives and loves of Patpong prostitutes. In fact, it is also a keenly perceptive view of Thai life among people who come to Bangkok to work or to have fun. Along, with her view of the system, Ms. Cleo Odzer also gives us a street level look at the 'farangs' who come to Bangkok for the street pleasures. It is a first rate read for anyone who wants to visit or understand Soi Patpong, Nana, or Soi Cowboy (three of BKK's Red Light districts).

Alex M. Wood is Professor and Director of the Behavioral Science Centre at Stirling Management School, University of Stirling, UK. He is credited with founding positive clinical psychology, and he has published more than 100 papers related to well-being in leading journals across psychology, medicine, and economics. He guest edited the special issue of Clinical Psychology Review that first introduced positive clinical psychology to the mainstream.

Judith Johnson is a Clinical Psychologist and Lecturer at the University of Leeds and the Bradford Institute of Health Research, UK. Her research is focused on understanding and supporting the development of wellbeing and resilience, and how this can be applied in healthcare settings to improve treatments and service delivery. She is co-editor of Case Formulation in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: The Treatment of Challenging and Complex Cases (second edition, 2015).
