or even better, her new spin-off

For only the second time in three years I sit down to write a review. Ironically, the first was also a book from Ms. Ward, The King. That review was more a reaction to the reviews I saw being posted. This, well, this is a tribute. In less than 100 pages, J.R. Ward paints with a full and luxurious brush. Her characters are fully drawn, flush with color and emotional depth. Truly, it's a gift. I don't know how old this story actually is, I did not purchase or read whatever anthology it originally appeared in. But as i 'turned' the last page on my Kindle my mind immediately started scheming on how to get more. Just more. The ways J.R. Ward could incorporate these characters into her Black Dagger Brotherhood series, or even better, her new spin-off. How fan-girl of me, I know. But after just 100 pages I was not ready to say good-bye.

The story itself reads like a secret fantasy of the hardest of us. That guilty pleasure-ish thing that we tell no one about, not even our 'bestie'. Strong, capable independent woman, tricked and taken as 'food' for the gorgeous (and virginal) vampire chained in the basement. Intrigue, lust and love ensue. In that order. Hah! Does it get any better than this for a secret fantasy? I think not. (Except maybe if there was a pirate...?) Hahaha, well done, Ms. Ward, as usual. Hat's off. Glad you decided to release this as a stand alone so that it may find a larger audience. And please don't discount entirely the thought of bringing Claire and Michael into the Caldwell fold. My head is spinning with possibilities, lol. Please take it from here...

Sweet Sexy Vampire Story

THE STORY: Claire Stroughton is a high powered New York lawyer who ends up being kidnapped in order to provide food for a imprisoned vampire. The vampire she meets has been held prisoner for years and doesn't even have a name. He is incredibly sweet and Claire finds herself wanting to help him escape.

OPINION: I really liked this story. It was focused and the vampire hero was incredibly sweet and sexy. He certainly shakes Claire's world to its foundations. The story is sexy and uncomplicated (in contrast with the Black Dagger Brotherhood books) and is focused only on the couple in the story. Anyone looking for sexy vampire should be pleased with this story.

WORTH MENTIONING: This story first appeared in the anthology "Dead After Dark".

FINAL DECISION: I really liked this story. The intense and sexy focus on the characters romance makes this uncomplicated and compelling.

CONNECTED BOOKS: THE STORY OF SON takes place in the same place as the Black Dagger Brotherhood books, Caldwell NY, but doesn't involve those books at all. Also, the rules of vampires seem similar but not identical to those detailed in the Black Dagger Brotherhood books.

STAR RATING: I give this story 4.25 stars.

I hate to even write this......

I can't believe I am going to "not like" a J.R. Ward vampire novel. Ugh. This hurts to even type. I am a HUGE Black Dagger Brotherhood fan! I can't tell you how many times I have read those 13 novels (seriously, I can't count...it's too many). Maybe that's why I found this book a little boring, rushed, and not honest to the "rules" of vampires in the other novels. Come on, J.R. Ward has to know her own rules she set forth for these guys. WHY DIDN'T SHE FOLLOW THEM?!

Vague Spoiler!
It states that this particular vampire doesn't know any other vampires. They need to feed off of each other to be "big and strong" otherwise they are puny. How is this particular vampire not only strong, but survived the transition without a female? That's just one of many examples of how this book was disappointing.

I know. I know. I'm picking apart the pieces, but I just wanted a short story of another amazing vampire. Didn't happen for me. So bummed!

Beautiful

This book is amazing! The pictures are absolutely gorgeous; each has a tiny paragraph accompanying it explaining what took the picture and what the picture is depicting. The pictures of Earth are especially stunning. If you have any interest in space whatsoever, you'll love this!

As the other reviewers noted, this is a wonderful book with beautiful photos from the NASA archives, each nicely captioned by the author - and I certainly recommend it. However, I have a quibble with what I believe to be an error in the caption for "Cepheid Variable" on page 131. The author implies that Edwin Hubble discovered that Cepheid variables can be used to determine an entity's distance from Earth. While Hubble certainly used the Cepheid variable "period-luminosity" relationship to show that the Andromeda 'nebula' was not part of the Milky Way galaxy - and, indeed, was a galaxy unto itself - the Cepheid period-luminosity relationship was discovered, not by Hubble, but by Henrietta Leavitt of the Harvard College Observatory. Beautiful photos for those space lovers!

I bought this book for my husband that loves all things "space". The photos in the book are very high quality and absolutely beautiful. The pages are thick and do not smudge or retain fingerprints. It looks wonderful on our coffee table.

The only downside to this, and isn't likely at fault by the seller, but rather the publisher is that it wasn't wrapped in a plastic bag or cover when shipped and was shipped with other items which marred the back of the book and upset me, but it was on the back slip cover so it isn't noticeable.

We love the book and the hubby is super happy with it! Certainly would recommend to others.

Chapter 1

Decision-Making and Administrative Organization

Administration is ordinarily discussed as the art of "getting things done." Emphasis is placed upon processes and methods for insuring incisive action. Principles are set forth for securing concerted action from groups of men. In all this discussion, however, not very much attention is paid to the choice which prefaces all action -- to the determining of what is to be done rather than to the actual doing. It is with this problem -- the process of choice which leads to action -- that the present study is concerned. In this introductory chapter the problem will be posed and a survey made of the topics to be taken up in the remaining chapters.

Although any practical activity involves both "deciding" and "doing," it has not commonly been recognized that a theory of administration should be concerned with the processes of decision as well as with the processes of action. This neglect perhaps stems from the notion that decision-making is confined to the formulation of over-all policy. On the contrary, the process of decision does not come to an end when the general purpose of an organization has been determined. The task of "deciding" pervades the entire administrative organization quite as much as does the task of "doing" -- indeed, it is integrally tied up with the latter. A general theory of administration must include principles of organization that will insure correct decision-making, just as it must include principles that will insure effective action.

DECISION-MAKING AND THE EXECUTION OF DECISIONS

It is clear that the actual physical task of carrying out an organization's objectives falls to the persons at the lowest level of the administrative hierarchy. The automobile, as a physical object, is built not by the engineer or the executive, but by the mechanic on the assembly line. The fire is extinguished, not by the fire chief or the captain, but by the team of firemen who play a hose on the blaze.

It is equally clear that the persons above this lowest or operative level in the administrative hierarchy are not mere surplus baggage, and that they too must have an essential role to play in the accomplishment of the agency's objectives. Even though, as far as physical cause and effect are concerned, it is the machine gunner and not the major who fights battles, the major is likely to have a greater influence upon the outcome of a battle than any single machine gunner.

How, then, do the administrative and supervisory staff of an organization affect that organization's work? The nonoperative staff of an administrative organization participate in the accomplishment of the objectives of that organization to the extent that they influence the decisions of the operatives -- the persons at the lowest level of the administrative hierarchy. The major can influence the battle to the extent that his head is able to direct the machine gunner's hand. By deploying his forces in the battle area and assigning specific tasks to subordinate units he determines for the machine gunner where he will take his stand and what his objective will be. In very small organizations the influence of all supervisory employees upon the operative employees may be direct, but in units of any size there are interposed between the top supervisors and the operative employees several levels of intermediate supervisors who are themselves subject to influences from above, and who transmit, elaborate, and modify these influences before they reach the operatives.

If this is a correct description of the administrative process, then the construction of an efficient administrative organization is a problem in social psychology. It is a task of setting up an operative staff and superimposing on that staff a supervisory staff capable of influencing the operative group toward a pattern of coordinated and effective behavior. The term "influencing" rather than "directing" is used here, for direction -- that is, the use of administrative authority -- is only one of several ways in which the administrative staff may affect the decisions of the operative staff; and, consequently, the construction of an administrative organization involves more than a mere assignment of functions and allocation of authority.

In the study of organization, the operative employee must be at the focus of attention, for the success of the structure will be judged by his performance within it. Insight into the structure and function of an organization can best be gained by analyzing the manner in which the decisions and behavior of such employees are influenced within and by the organization.

CHOICE AND BEHAVIOR

All behavior involves conscious or unconscious selection of particular actions out of all those which are physically possible to the actor and to those persons over whom he exercises influence and authority. The term "selection" is used here without any implication of a conscious or deliberate process. It refers simply to the fact that, if the individual follows one particular course of action, there are other courses of action that he thereby forgoes. In many cases the selection process consists simply in an established reflex action -- a typist hits a particular key with a finger because a reflex has been established between a letter on a printed page and this particular key. Here the action is, in some sense at least, rational (i.e. goal-oriented), yet no element of consciousness or deliberation is involved.

In other cases the selection is itself the product of a complex chain of activities called "planning" or "design" activities. An engineer, for example, may decide upon the basis of extensive analysis that a particular bridge should be of cantilever design. His design, further implemented by detailed plans for the structure, will lead to a whole chain of behaviors by the individuals constructing the bridge.

In this volume many examples will be given of all varieties of selection process. All these examples have in common the following characteristics: At any moment there are a multitude of alternative (physically) possible actions, any one of which a given individual may undertake; by some process these numerous alternatives are narrowed down to that one which is in fact acted out. The words "choice" and "decision" will be used interchangeably in this study to refer to this process. Since these terms as ordinarily used carry connotations of self-conscious, deliberate, rational selection, it should be emphasized that as used here they include any process of selection, regardless of whether the above elements are present to any degree.

VALUE AND FACT IN DECISION

A great deal of behavior, and particularly the behavior of individuals within administrative organizations, is purposive -- oriented toward goals or objectives. This purposiveness brings about an integration in the pattern of behavior, in the absence of which administration would be meaningless; for, if administration consists in "getting things done" by groups of people, purpose provides a principal criterion in determining what things are to be done.

The minute decisions that govern specific actions are inevitably instances of the application of broader decisions relative to purpose and to method. The walker contracts his leg muscles in order to take a step; he takes a step in order to proceed toward his destination; he is going to the destination, a mail box, in order to mail a letter; he is sending a letter in order to transmit certain information to another person, and so forth. Each decision involves the selection of a goal, and a behavior relevant to it; this goal may in turn be mediate to a somewhat more distant goal; and so on, until a relatively final aim is reached. In so far as decisions lead toward the selection of final goals, they will be called "value judgments"; so far as they involve the implementation of such goals they will be called "factual judgments."

Unfortunately, problems do not come to the administrator carefully wrapped in bundles with the value elements and the factual elements neatly sorted. For one thing, goals or final objectives of governmental organization and activity are usually formulated in very general and ambiguous terms -- "justice," "the general welfare," or "liberty." Then, too, the objectives as defined may be merely intermediate to the attainment of more final aims. For example, in certain spheres of action, the behavior of men is generally oriented around the "economic motive." Yet, for most men, economic gain is not usually an end in itself, but a means for attaining more final ends: security, comfort, and prestige.

Finally, the value and factual elements may be combined, in some cases, in a single objective. The apprehension of criminals is commonly set up as an objective of a municipal police department. To a certain extent this objective is conceived as an end in itself, that is, as aimed toward the apprehension and punishment of offenders against the law; but from another point of view apprehension is considered a means for protecting citizens, for rehabilitating offenders, and for discouraging potential offenders.

The Hierarchy of Decisions. The concept of purposiveness involves a notion of a hierarchy of decisions -- each step downward in the hierarchy consisting in an implementation of the goals set forth in the step immediately above. Behavior is purposive in so far as it is guided by general goals or objectives; it is rational in so far as it selects alternatives which are conducive to the achievement of the previously selected goals.

It should not be inferred that this hierarchy or pyramid of goals is perfectly organized or integrated in any actual behavior. A governmental agency, for instance, may be directed simultaneously toward several distinct objectives: a recreation department may seek to improve the health of children, to provide them with good uses for their leisure time, and to prevent juvenile delinquency, as well as to achieve similar goals for the adults in the community.

Excellent Book

South Asian histiography is beset by three main problems: firstly, it is highly partisan especially books that purport to cover formation of Pakistan and partition of British India. Secondly, these histories tend to concentrate on works of the good and great, or they are based on rather mechanistic structuaral accounts. Thirdly, far too often they are indebted to out-moded epistemologies. It is to his great credit that Ian Talbots overcomes these three problems and produces what is currently the best history of Pakistan availible. He points out that the creation of Pakistan has to take account the scale of popular support that the idea of Pakistan enjoyed among Muslims- something most critics of the creation of Pakistan neglect in their effort to maintain that Pakistan only came to being because of the vanity of handful of individuals. Talbot's account is through and rigourous. Anyone, interested in the history of Pakistan could do no better than read this book.

Some additional information for a good book.

I have read this book, always optimistic in the hope that I will come across even better accounts on this much misunderstood subject, but sadly that is a wish that remains unfulfilled after many long years. Ian Talbot has meticulously documented and provided scholastic information that will otherwise be useful and handy for students and interested readers alike, but I--for one--would like to add through this review, a synopsis of what I feel he has left out. This concerns the crux of what needs to be sorely known about Pakistan's basic realities.
Pakistan is definitely in many ways a historical "stepchild" of India, whose creation is owed to some complex situations evolved in India due to extensive invasions from its Northwestern side, and the arrival of Islam here through those invasions. Unlike other "standard" nation states of the modern era, however, Pakistan is enveloped in an aura of artificiality. This is not simply because of the fact that it was carved "artificially" out of India on the demand of one man for apparently fudgy reasons; but
this artificiality is more apparent in the fact that when its 54 year history is studied, Pakistan is seen as a state which seems to exist primarily in order to fulfill the predatory aims of its ruling elite classes, unlike most other countries in the world. (This elite has been rated as among the most rapacious by the world's premier anti-corruption think-tanks and watchdog bodies). The prime reason of this elite's existence and rule of the Pakistani state all along has been corruption and misappropriation of wealth for their own enjoyment. It was for this reason that they lost East Pakistan, which became Bangladesh in 1971 after a landmark struggle. Then, they have literally been using Afghanistan as an unofficial "backyard" of theirs since 1992, after it had endured 14 years of ravages due to the Soviet intervention there and prolonged civil war. And they have been fuelling the fires of war and terrorism in neighbouring Kashmir since 1989 especially--and have "adopted" it as their "cause"--not out of any conviction about Kashmiri independence, but to focus attention there and to have something "to live for" in order to keep their topsy-turvy and unnatural system alive and going. In other words, they thrive not on a fair social base or development, but on mischief and destruction. This speaks volumes for their true nature, to the incisive analyst.
In all of this, and in fact for their lifeblood and their existence, this elite of bandit rulers has been parasitically dependent wholly and solely on the largesse and aid of America and Western Europe--which was fuelled by the formers' own greedy and myopic motives. In the '80s and '90s of the past century, this elite acted shamelessly as the willing sycophants and henchmen for America's dirty games against the USSR and progressive governments in the region. Now when that Islamic terrorism and atmosphere of corruption sponsored here by the US and its allies have finally begun to backfire on them, the "poor" Pakistani ruling classes are out in the dark cold night, between the devil and the deep blue sea. They deserve it, for the nature of their character and what they have done. I would like to remind Mr. Talbot that no authoritative history of Pakistan would otherwise be complete without an unfazed judgement on its ruling elites. They are a blot on the face of the earth.
Another valuable differentiation which I feel that Talbot has not pointed out with the analysis needed, is that from among the four main nationalities which constitute Pakistan, the Pathans (Pukhtuns) are the most offensive. In fact, their cultural mores proudly "sanctify" criminal practices and lawless attitudes, by backing them with the sanction of custom and tradition. The Punjabi nationality are in the majority, but the copying of Pathan behaviour is regarded by them as a matter of prestige.

Almost a Matrix-like download

The key to a book being 'really amazing' can often just be that it is pitched to the exact level the reader needs, and is about something he or she is really interested in. I think both of these things conspire to make me a biased reviewer of this text, but I can say that after just the first chapter I was already putting what I learned to work in an ASP program...yes, not a theoretical compiler project, etc., but a good-old website. There is so much that we do in programming that is compiler-like (and so much we do to interact with the compilers driving our languages) that having a better conceptualization and a solid vocabulary to describe what compiling is about can benefit any programmer.

The writing style is direct, not boring, and is not entirely absent of a little dry wit. But it is not personal. The cover art should not lead you to think this is a 'fun' approach to the subject. It's business.

Can't go wrong if you like this sort of thing. If you're a student just trying to get by somehow, well, at the price I guess you might as well give it a try. Besides, then you can throw in some comment about "the dragon book," and seem really in the know about this 'classic'.

I have read 2 chapters so far and this book is great - explains the gritty details of implementing languages w/o using grad-school level terminology. Plain english and easy to understand. I'll update again when I am further along.

Halifax (Shamanic Voices, 1991, etc.--not reviewed) boasts impressive New Age credentials: ex-wife of psychologist Stansilav Grof; former assistant to Joseph Campbell; creator of California's spiritually experimental Ojai Foundation; student of assorted shamans and of Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh (who offers a grateful introduction). During her decades of world travel--her memories here range from circumambulating a sacred Tibetan mountain to eating peyote in Mexico's Huichol Sierras--Halifax has evolved a worldview that rejects what she calls Western society's ``dualistic'' perspective in favor of one that perceives ``a self coextensive with all phenomena.'' Simply ``by being born,'' Halifax contends, we share ``the World Wound''--a state of universal suffering--that we can escape through several paths, or ``Ways'': the Way of ``Traditions''; of ``the Mountain''; of ``Language''; of ``Story''; of ``Nonduality''; of ``Protectors''; of ``Ancestors,'' and of ``Compassion.'' Each Way involves a return to ``the fruitful darkness''--the shadow side of things, found in the root truths of Native religions, in the fecundity of nature, and in the stillness of meditation. One of the best books I have ever read

(and I have read a lot of books!) I am on my second reading, and will soon reread a third time, slowly, taking notes and making my own commentary. Halifax's ability to combine a deep understanding of Buddhism, shamanism, deep ecology, the history of civilization, indigenous cultures is unparalleled - and her understanding is not academic, it has been gained through forty-plus years of experience. This is a book to read slowly, several times, meditating, pondering, and experiencing for oneself what Halifax so profoundly points to.

Jerome Mertz, PhD, is professor of Biomedical Engineering and director of the Biomicroscopy Laboratory at Boston University. Prior to joining Boston University, he was a CNRS researcher at the École Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles in Paris. He specializes in the development of novel microscopy techniques for biological imaging.

Excellent Introduction

I am a graduate student who works on optical microscopes. I actually took the class with the author of this book, so perhaps I am a bit biased, however I found the book to be very insightful.

Pros:
-The book has good coverage of many modern optical imaging techniques, including OCT, Digital Holography, Two Photon microscopy, some of the more standard non-linear techniques, and super-resolution techniques.
-Several gems of intuition in the book
-There is a reasonable amount of math to back up the descriptions, but it is "good" math because it is presented in a way that really reinforces the concepts, it is not math-for-math's-sake like I have seen in many esoteric graduate-level textbooks.
-I like how the references are discussed in the test (i.e. "see [5] for a very readable review, and see [6-8] for more in-depth reviews with an emphasis on ...")
-Intuitive approach to 3D Optical Transfer functions, interesting and unique discussion of radiometery

Cons:
-some of the notation is slightly non-standard, but usually this places more emphasis on the content and less on the math (so not necessarily a con)
-a few of the earlier chapters (on background material) are a little hard for an introduction level book

This is a must for those that want to understand how microscopes work. It provides you with a coherent theoretical framework to adress all classic techniques but also (and most importantly) "new microscopies". This books really makes you understand the physics that underlie optical microscopy and will surely help anyone willing to engage in this exciting field of research.

Be careful...

Great introduction, but lots of the outlined theory doesn't match experimental observation. In particular transmitted light modalities that rely on the interference of fields for example DIC or PC are treated in the same way as florescence modalities, despite a well known non-linearity in the transfer function.

A great read

I love the spirit of this book, which is thorough, well-written and seeks to add to what's already out there on the topic of the Kyma language. The richness and power of the language (eg hot variables) is laid out with intelligence, respect and a modicum of what can only be described as love. :)

If you're a novice like me, you'll appreciate the extra effort taken here to go over some common ground, but with a seasoned eye of one who has walked the path on many occasions. And who wouldn't want a Sherpa or guide on such a fruitful, yet difficult journey?

Great review of the kyma system

If you are a kyma newbie this book its a great read its also good for reviewing the basics even if you have read the kyma x book , basicly its similar to kyma x it cover the basics from the system and gives you a different perspective of it

I found some stuff more clear and easy in this book than i did in kyma x this book does not replace the other they go hand by hand i will recomend reading the kyma x first then review all in this one so you get all more clear that way,
Its a fun and useful read .

What i found more useful its the part on 50 basic sounds and also i liked alot the personal perspective of the author on how he use those sounds thats very very useful to give you some ideas on when and how to use some sounds
Talking about that i really would like a sort of cookbook at the end of the book or maybe another book if the author would like to do that where he could forget tha basics wich are already covered here then concentrate in giving more complex examples explaining each element

you know when you are starting even if you read the description of the sound or element in the chain that not necesarily make it clear on how or when to use it and thats where this hints from the author really are appreciated so a new book in that direction could help improve alot the sound creation for new users so then they can explore with alot more vocabulary you definitly need to read books on computer music so you understand the kyma sounds alot better dont expect to be a computer master just by reading this book or the manual that and a good electronic music book goes hand by hand

The cook book could also have a cd to hear examples and maybe some samples so you can do some tutorials on morphing etc

In a nutshell its a great book for reviewing and starting on kyma im looking forward for more books on the subject by the same author.

This book is really amazing - very helpful for everybody, who want to learn Kyma. It helps to understand a lot of rather strange peculiarities of Kyma. But it's an addition to the Kyma X Revealed - I think, the best way to learn is to read this book and Kyma X Revealed simultaneously - SOS when you are away from Kyma, and Revealed, when you are in front of it.
