Jeremiah Burroughs (1599-1646) During his life, Jeremiah Burroughs was loved for his preaching and gentle spirit and was persecuted for his non-conformity to the Church of England. Forced to flee to Holland and Rotterdam for a time, he eventually returned to England and preached to congregations in Stepney and Cripplegate in London, two of the largest congregations in all of England.

A Masterful Treatise On The Great Evil Of Sin

The Evil of Evils addresses a great need and exposes a great weakness of those who are followers of Christ in our day. The theme of the book is that there is infinitely more evil in the least sin than there is in the greatest affliction. The renowned Puritan preacher Jeremiah Burroughs shows in great detail the fact that there is no good in sin at all and that,though affliction is not desirable in itself,God uses it in the lives of His people to accomplish much good. Rarely do modern authors even begin to approach the depth and breadth that the Puritan's reached in exposing sin for the immense evil that it is. This is due in part to the strong opposition to such preaching and teaching that will often be encountered. On p.28 Burroughs makes this comment about how evil sin is "Sin is so opposite to God that, if it were possible that the least drop of it could get into God's nature,God would instantly cease to be God." Sin is so opposed to the nature and the very existence of God that it would destroy Him if it had the power to do so. Mr. Burroughs then seeks to show how sin is opposite to man's good. The truth set forth in 'The Evil Of Evils' is so much needed in our day because it is to be feared that many in our day are much more fearful of the least aflliction and have very little fear of the greatest sin. If the believer is to bring every thought captive to the obedience of the Lord Jesus Christ then sin must be exposed for the great evil that it is,and affliction should be viewed as an instument that God uses to conform His people to the image of His Son. The Word of God exhorts the people of God to count it all joy in the midst of trials but never is this to be their attitude toward sin. This book will help the Christian reader to have and maintain a godly perspective with regard to sin and affliction.

Simply the Most Forceful Theological Exposition on Sin

It is mind-boggling that Jeremiah Burroughs wrote and preached at least twenty interconnected sermons about sin, whose manuscripts were bundled into a 345-page book entitled "The Evil of Evils." Puritan ministers have this habit, that is, to handle a particular passage of Scriptures with such a level of depth and meticulousness, and with such soul-piercing applications that few or none even come close.

After briefly elaborating on the thesis of the book being "there is a greater evil in the least sin than in the greatest affliction" taken from Job 36:21, Burroughs gives nine excellent corollaries (p.18-23); nine intensely practical corollaries, specifically the last one. I wouldn't write them down here so I won't overwhelm the readers with excessive content of the book, but would invite them to read for themselves. The next interesting part is where an allusion that the reason there seems to be much evil in afflictions is precisely because there is much sin in them, while it is not strictly true that all afflictions are the result of sins as we consider two examples of Adam and Job in the Old Testament. This argument is covered in the third section under the heading of sin being opposite to all good (p.180-191), after an excellent treatment on the depth of the loathsomeness and the dreadfulness of sin in relation to God and to human beings. Here Burroughs argues sin as being the strength of all evils, the sting of affliction, the curse, the shame and the eternality of all evil, where though he uses the word "evil," these statements are applicable as well when the word "evil" is replaced by "affliction." This is worth mulling over. The reason why there is so much power in the intensity, so much sting, curse, shame and eternality in affliction is because there is sin in it.

Another thought-provoking, conscience-awakening, and soul-stinging section is when he talks about one who "may be in a most miserable condition, though he is delivered from outward affliction" under which he proposes two cases; "if a man is prosperous by sin," and "when one becomes more sinful by their prosperity" (p.257-271). These should properly fall under the application section though Burrough does not divide the treatise this way. Yet another section that I am most stunned and stung with is the last one where he examines six possible cases: (1) those who are more afraid of affliction than sin, (2) those who are careful to keep themselves from sin, but merely for fear of affliction, (3) those who will sin to avoid affliction, (4) those who, when they are under affliction, are more sensible of the strength of affliction than of sin, (5) those who get out of affliction by sinful courses, and yet think they are doing well, and (6) those, who after being delivered from affliction, can bless themselves in their sin (p.330-344).

"The Evil of Evils" is a dangerous read but on the other hand, a most necessary read. It is not a comfortable read, though it's not all gloom and doom as Burroughs did not forget to offer the gospel and other compassionate pastoral counsels (see p.272-273, 302-306, 307-309). In closing, he charges the readers as follows in regard to all he has "said of the evil of sin,"

"... know that every one of you here, at that great Audit Day (he was referring to the judgment day), must be brought to answer for what you have heard, and how you have heard, and for what effect it has had on you all. Consider what has been said, and the Lord give you understanding in all things" (p.345).

Why Sin is to be Feared, Avoided, and Hated Even More Than Affliction

Most people will do all they can to avoid affliction, but do very little to avoid sin. The one recurring theme of this book: it is better to choose affliction than sin. As Burroughs expounds godly wisdom from Scripture, he shows us why nothing is to be more feared than sin, nothing is to be more avoided than sin, and nothing is to be more hated than sin.

He effectively shows that sin is the greatest "evil of evils" by exposing the nature of sin: how it is so opposite to God, wrongs and offends God, most opposite to man's good (and more opposite to man's good than affliction is), takes away excellencies in all things, of the same nature as the devil, a furtherance of the devil's work, fullfills the devil's will, makes man conformable to the devil, etc. Along with pungent analogies, Burroughs opens our eyes to see the ugly heinous nature of sin and exposes sin for what it truly is, so that we may once again have a dread of sin, a hatred for sin, and a love for holiness.

Die deutschen handelsrechtlichen Vorschriften zur Rechnungslegung sehen sich in diesem Zusammenhang zunehmender Kritik ausgesetzt. Grund hierfür ist ihre primäre Zielsetzung, den steuer- und ausschüttbaren Gewinn nach dem Grundsatz des Gläubigerschutzes auf Basis des Vorsichtsprinzips zu ermitteln. Diese Ausrichtung konfligiert mit dem vorrangigen Zweck der anglo-amerikanischen Rechnungslegung, den Kapitalmarktteilnehmern nach dem Grundsatz des Aktionärsschutzes auf Basis einer entscheidungsrelevanten Bilanzierung faire Informationen über die Vermögens-, Finanz- und Ertragslage des Unternehmens bereitzustellen. Die Ansatzpunkte der Kritik lassen sich hierbei im wesentlichen auf folgende zwei Aussagen zusammenfassen: (1) Der Grundsatz der Maßgeblichkeit der handelsrechtlichen für die steuerrechtliche Gewinnermittlung, insbesondere in Form der umgekehrten Maßgeblichkeit, die steuerliche Vergünstigungen, z.B. wirtschaftspolitisch motivierte Sonderabschreibungen, von ihrer Vornahme in der Handelsbilanz abhängig macht, beeinträchtigt den Informationsgehalt der deutschen Jahresabschlüsse. (2) Gesetzliche Bewertungswahlrechte erlauben eine für den externen Bilanzleser nicht erkennbare Bildung und Auflösung stiller Rücklagen. Die hierdurch mögliche Verschleierung der tatsächlichen Vermögens-, Finanz- und Ertragslage schränkt die Kontrolle über die Leistungen des Managements ein und versetzt dieses in die Lage, einen nicht unerheblichen Einfluß auf die Ermittlung des ausschüttbaren Gewinns auszuüben. In a lurid, sometimes sensational, tabloid-like account of Roman gladiatorial life, British author Baker (Invisible Eagle: The History of Nazi Occultism) offers an encyclopedic examination. While there were a few famous gladiators, such as Spartacus, the majority of these warriors were unnamed slaves, criminals or prisoners of war whose lives were nasty, brutish and short. Baker points out that there were different groups of gladiators, each with its own style of fighting. The Thracians, for example, used a round shield and sword, while the retiarii (net-men) used a net and trident spear. The games themselves were sponsored by the emperor, whose popularity was often secured by the magnitude of the contests he hosted. Using historical accounts of various games, Baker imaginatively re-creates a day at the Coliseum in Rome, which included a series of fights between criminals one armed, the other defenseless staged in a round robin manner until only one criminal was left standing; the victor was then killed unceremoniously by a Roman guard. The afternoon brought on the great battles between the "trained" gladiators, like the Thracians and the retiarii. The blood and dust from one combat had barely cleared before another began. Although they reflected the virtue of killing and facing death with the courage and dignity that dominated the Roman Empire, gladiatorial contests came to an end in the fifth century, when Christianity became the official state religion and when the empire itself was weakening. Baker builds upon an already established wealth of scholarship e.g., Michael Grant's Gladiators (2000) as he offers a lively, voyeuristic glimpse into the ancient world. Fans of the Ridley Scott movie won't be disappointed.

Adult/High School-Baker states at the very beginning that this book is not intended to be a scholarly study, but rather a history for the layperson. He lives up to this disclaimer. The book begins with a look at the origins of the gladiator games (circa 400 B.C.E.) and ends with why they were abolished 800 years later. In the 150 pages in between, the author covers all aspects of the games: training, equipment, styles of fighting, and types of combat (man versus man, man versus beast, and the grand spectacle of the naval battles). There are chapters on why men became gladiators (some were slaves, others prisoners of wars or common criminals, while others voluntarily participated), the development of the arenas, and even a chapter on the emperors who fought. A culminating chapter called "A Day at the Games" provides readers with a vivid blow-by-blow description-what it was like in the expensive and cheap seats, the opening ceremonies, the scheduling of the events, their staging, and the reactions of the crowds. Baker goes into great detail and the book may not appeal to squeamish readers. It is, however, very well written and the information is thorough enough for student research.

Baker (Invisible Eagle: The History of Nazi Occultism) apparently hopes to benefit from the success of Hollywood's blockbuster movie Gladiator with this popular account of Rome's gladiator tradition. His claim that this book is "an attempt to chart the history of the Roman games without succumbing to the anachronism of imposing our own early 21st Century moral attitudes upon them" is, of course, hyperbole, for classical historians are rarely guilty of this historiographical failing. Baker often tells unsubstantiated and irrelevant stories about various emperors in an effort to stimulate the reader. In the chapter titled, "Curio's Swiveling Amphitheater," his muddled theory about the model for the games' venue rests upon a tale of Pliny the Elder that distinguished historian Michael Grant has called spurious. This is a terribly unfocused work, especially the chapter titled "A Day at the Games," which is supposed to give readers an idea of the bloody spectacles by presenting the events in a novelistic manner. Readers who are actually curious about the roots of the games will be far better served by Alison Futrell's Blood in the Arena: The Spectacle of Roman Power (Univ. of Texas, 2001). Not recommended. Sand and blood in ancient Rome

Since I was in my teens, movie pictures like "Spartacus", "Demetrius the gladiator" and "Quo Vadis?" inspired me with an inextinguishable thirst to know facts about Gladiators & Roman Circus. I was able to find more than one book about Spartacus and his revolt, but on gladiator's everyday life, origins, evolution among other issues, I was unsuccessful. Worst of all, the recent movie "Gladiator", renew my interest.

Finally I found this book at Amazon's Store (where else?).

It is at the same time an oasis for my thirst and a let down in some aspects.

First the bright side: Mr. Baker has done a very interesting research and show his findings in a very amenable way.

All the main issues are addressed: origin of gladiatorial institution, organization, evolution and extinction. Weaponry, different kinds of fights, ceremonies, circus emplacement, glossary of terms. A vivid reconstruction of "A day at the Circus" and some other interesting items about these ancient warriors.

The shadowy side: the edition and typography of the book is poor, it looks as it was given to press in a hurry (trying to catch with film success?). Some side stories are well known, other are not directly related with the main object of the book. Bibliography is scarce and no reproductions are shown.

Balancing pros & cons the book is fairly good read for anyone interested in this particular subject.

Not a Good History, but Might be a Good Read

I was really disappointed by this book. I confess to being something of a classics nerd, so I was hoping for a proper historical look at the gladiatorial games. And while it's true that Baker does look at most aspects of the phenomenon, he doesn't do so with a good historian's perspective.

Early in the book, he warns against applying modern sensibilities to ancient intitutions. This is a wise and reasonable approach. It is therefore a pity that he utterly abondons it, making countless judgements throughout the book. Some of these are explicit, but most are implicit in his choice of phrasing and other subtler aspects of his writing. While I agree that, to my modern morals, these games were barbaric, I find his judgements annoying and out of place in a historical work.

Another great flaw of this book is that the author takes every historical account as true. Seutonius, for example, is full of racey tales of the dark sides of the early emperors. (Plus Caesar who, despite Baker's assertions, is not considered an emporor. This isn't the only minor inaccuracy I noticed, incidentally.) However, it's doubtful that all of it, or even necessarily most of it is true. But Baker relies on Seutonius and others as literal fact upon which to base his "history". It's difficult to know how much of Baker to trust given his apparent inability to be skeptical.

Finally, the chapter on the Emperor-Gladiators is a wretched peice of work. The account of Caligula is just a transcribed Seutonius. (Why not just read the original in the first place, then?). And the overwelming majority of the chapter has nothing to do with these emperors' behavior in the arena, it's just a long liteny of how these men were depraved. This isn't the only case where Baker shows a poor ability to stay focused on his topic, but it's the most vexing.

Overall, I get the sense that Baker lacks a solid background in history. (Which may not be correct, but that's the impression this book conveys.) Instead, I get the impression of an author who is out to titillate the audience more than to provided a careful historical look at the gladiatorial games. On the one hand, this makes the book more interesting and approachable for a broad audience. On the other hand, it makes it a poor read for anyone seeking real understanding,

A Lurid Introduction to the Roman Games

"The Gladiator" is a readable and sometimes melodramatic account of the gladiatorial games of ancient Rome. The book is not a systematic, chronological history of the arena--rather, it offers an impression of what the contests would have been like at various points in the development of the Republic and the Empire.
The games started as sword fights between slaves at funeral ceremonies--sometimes to the death, sometimes not. Over time, successful Romans undertook to display their wealth by producing increasingly elaborate spectacles. The cost and complexity of the enterprise eventually became so great that the state became involved in staging the proceedings.
Baker describes (sometimes in upsetting detail) the different contests that a Roman could expect to see at the arena: battles between warriors armed with various types of weapons and armor, fights to the death between "hunters" and terrified animals, naval battles between fleets manned by doomed slaves, and brutal executions. Occasionally, an Emperor would step into the arena to display his fighting prowess (or to indulge his taste for sadism)--of course, his guard always made sure that his opponents were armed with wooden swords and doomed to die at the Emperor's hand.
Baker's book culminates in a chapter called "A Day at the Games." The account is lurid and unsettling, and Baker brings home the terror and pain of the men, women and animals who died in the arena to the cheers of the crowd.
The cruelty of the games simply staggers the imagination, to say nothing of the fact that this went on for hundreds of years. It makes you think that the term "Roman civilization" is a bit of an oxymoron.

Consciously mirroring the title of Johan Huizinga's classic The Waning of the Middle Ages, this welcome addition to the Yale Intellectual History of the West series deconstructs European culture in the age of Cervantes, Montaigne and Galileo. Moving easily across national and disciplinary boundaries, Bouwsma (professor emeritus, UC Berkeley) challenges the assumption that we are direct heirs to the Renaissance. He argues with stunning clarity that the period from 1550 to 1640 was a phase of complex ambivalence, doubt and retreat, and that anxiety stimulated both cultural change and spectacular creativity. Along with the continuing Renaissance drive to destroy old barriers to understanding and human fulfillment came a countervailing concern that freedom had become absurd in excess, as suffocating as the overripe fruit of late-medieval culture, famously described by Huizinga. The imagery of disease, misbirth and disorder became pervasive, while a propensity to melancholy was fashionable in some circles. (Like a number of features of Bouwsma's argument, this has interesting implications for our own modern crises and depressions.) Nothing, people felt, was quite what it seemed; expectation and hypocrisy obscured the deeper self. There was, in short, "a profound set of discontents released by the peculiar freedoms of Renaissance culture." Out of these anxieties a craving for order emerged: a compulsion to categorize, an insistence on social boundaries and a growing attraction for mathematical certainties. Bouwsma produces a masterful portrait of an era, one deserving to become as canonical as Huizinga; it will be increasingly difficult to teach or discuss the 16th century without it. 20 illus. not seen by PW. But even as the movements of the Renaissance gathered strength, simultaneous impulses operated in a contrary direction. Bouwsma identifies a growing concern with personal identity, shifts in the interests of major thinkers, a decline in confidence about the future, and a heightening of anxiety.Exploring the fluctuating and sometimes contradictory atmosphere in which Renaissance artists and thinkers operated, Bouwsma shows how the very liberation from old boundaries and modes of expression that characterized the Renaissance became itself increasingly stifling and destructive. By drawing attention to the waning of the Renaissance culture of freedom and creativity, Bouwsma offers a wholly new and intriguing interpretation of the place of the European Renaissance in modern culture.

Bacon and Montaigne Omelette

It is William Bouwsma's thesis that the Renaissance was not the budding spring of the modern age, but an organic era with a beginning and an end. Curiously, the forces given birth at the beginning of the era proved to be so frightening that the Renaissance players rushed to euthanize them. The Renaissance did not wane so much as it was dismantled, like an errant atomic bomb, by scientists overawed by their invention.
Bouwsma examines sixteenth century European thought in piecemeal-philosophy, theology, politics, science, literature, the theater-and with Newtonian precision describes how the adventuresome Renaissance spirit smashed molds of dated thinking and psychological ordering. Then, in reaction to its own recklessness, the Renaissance mind either retreated to old certainties rehabilitated or domesticated its inventions into a more tranquil conventionality.
Historical essays of this sort can make for delightful reading. Boorstin's "The Discoverers," for example, captures both the specificity and the poetry of scientific history. Bouwsma, unfortunately, errs on the side of specificity. The flow of the work reminds one of a lengthy receiving line where every great thinker gets a handshake and a bon mot, but soon it is time to move on to the next guest. This is not to say that some of the guests don't mingle excessively. The author has a warm spot in his heart for Shakespeare, Sarpi, Jonson, Hobbes, Hooker, Galileo, and in particular Bacon and Montaigne, who pop up dozens of times in the narrative. Regrettably, "pop up" is exactly what they do, to provide proof texts and anecdotal spicing. The reader who is not intimately familiar with Bacon, for example, will not get a significant taste of his thought.
This is most unfortunate, because I believe Bouwsma has at least scratched the surface of an interesting concept: the Renaissance as psychological event. From our vantage point the Renaissance looms as an unmitigated liberation. Bouwsma, on the other hand, implies that for every man who felt liberated, another felt terrified. The great irony is that frequently these were one and the same man, that few intellectuals were so dense as not to feel some fear at the rending of the medieval synthesis. There is no shortage of great Renaissance men in this work, but only a glimmer of their ambiguity.

A layman's reaction to a splendid but dense Book

This book is by no means easy to read. But a little persistence pays off handsomely. True enough one gets the impression that the author's own conclusions gets in the way of a more objective explication. Albeit the subject matter is dense as he tackles many very different dimensions of the Renaissance or rather the development of the Renaissance after its clear enough upwelling in the 15th Century in Italy then Europe. But the many strands are pinpointed and it is up to the reader somewhat to uphold or downplay this or that 'tendency'. Also he seems to rely on Hooker rather a lot but I cannot myself comment on the necessity or otherwise of that reliance. Personally I feel there has been too much specialization and therefore loss of appreciation of the broad movements and spectacular pitfalls in history but on the other hand it is not at all easy to characterize an Age without getting sufficient information of sufficient reliability as would require a fairly in-depth study. Bouwsma whets the appetite by the fairly numerous strands he delineates if only to rouse healthy and exciting skepticism.....

George Thompson, a Vedic scholar and Sanskritist, has more than twenty years of experience teaching the Bhagavad Gita at college level. He is an assistant professor at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, Massachusetts.

Refreshing translation of classic Hindu text

Having read atleast 3 versions of the Bhagavad Gita (Radhakrishnan, Prabhupada, Easwaran), Thompson's translation is suprisingly poetic and has a refreshing feel to it that many editions miss in pursuit of philosophical,doctrinal discussion that are indeed useful for advanced students and seekers, but not for introductory reading for someone that is new to Hindu, samkhya philosophy.

I'm glad my Intro to Hinduism professor chose this edition of the Bhagavad Gita because it is very readable and still manages to capture the main messages and brilliance of Krishna's doctrine to Arjuna. This translation is very accurate, Thompson does indeed have a thorough understanding of Sanskrit as is evidenced by the flow of language in his rendering of the Gita. Certainly recommend this translation to anyone reading the Bhagavad Gita for the first time or for just a casual, but accurate reading.
